So my girlfriend and I have decided that we are going to get married. We are going to do the K1 visa as its seems the quickest way we can be living together and that I can get working as well ( I hope ). I am Canadian - shes in NYC. I believe from reading up on all the past posts and guides on this site that the K1 is about a 6 mnth process if all goes well - am I correct? Also what would be the timeline in getting a work permit once you enter the USA. ( I am moving to NYC when the process is done so my entry point will be JFK). Does the work permit come as soon as you get approval for K1? Or do you have to wait and go through more processes?

Thanks!

6 mos might be optimistic dependent on which USCIS service center or consulate you plan on using.

YMMV

With the exception of Halifax*, if you fly from Canada you will clear customs and immigration in Canada so JFK will not be your POE. Further entering from Canada POE information can be found in the Canada thread in the Regional section of VJ (towards the bottom of the main forum page).

*Halifax might've changed and finally become a clearance airport.

Your timeline says K3 yet you are asking about K1 - very different visas!
