I don't know. She's overprotective a bit because he is her only son, and her husband passed away many years ago when my fiancé was just a child. So I understand why his family is SO close.

This kind of stood out to me because some years ago my second daughter moved back in with me and her dad (my first hubby). Daughter and I went everywhere together, like best friends. When she married and moved to Australia I was crushed (but I didn't tell her). Your MIL could be feeling that about her son...maybe.

Honestly, I think she is feeling that way. He has been away from France for about 5 years now for his M.S. degree and PhD, and this summer is his first time back home in a long time (well, for more than just Christmas anyway). So I can imagine that she is really wishing that he would just stay in France. But everybody knows that he is just here while we do our immigration process (and/or until he finds a job somewhere).

I know that she doesn't dislike me... but I wish she would show more kindness while I am here for such a short period of time before he and I get married next year (to receive her "blessing," I suppose). But maybe it's like somebody said in a previous reply... the bonding aspect of relationships is different in France vs the US vs anywhere else.

Anyway, I'll keep a smile on my face and hope things get better once I learn more French. But the truth is that I just feel awkward being here because I feel like the American girl who is stealing her child away.
