I suspect dwheels76 is correct. You may have a very hard time getting on the plane.

US Immigration officers may be obligated to let you through once they verify your citizenship, but airlines can get in serious trouble (as in extremely large fines) if they transport someone to US territory who turns out to be inadmissible. This causes the airlines to be even stricter on the documentation requirements than the destination country's immigration officers, as odd as that sounds.

UC citizens are not inadmissible therefore the above is irrelevant to the original discussion

You can get on the plane with a foreign passport, you just shouldn't enter the US on one

i don't get it.

The above is right, get in the plane as a foreigner and when you get to the US you have to tell them you are a citizen. They can't deny entry but they will hold you to verify your info and citizenship. This is crazy but I've seen this on TV and a guy just walked through the boarders from Mexico. The immigration officer was like where the hell are you going? The poor guy didn't speak English and he said "I'm the United States of America" he had to be checked and got admitted. Now im not saying this because I know that it will definitely work but I know that they can't deny you entry if you are a citizen even without a passport. Good luck
