I don't know why, but nobody ever asked if I am mexican, or whatever that speaks spanish, because my accent is a bit different, so I've been asked twice if I'm from russia, and one girl said I am tall and I don't have dark skin and that she could never tell I'm from Brazil (people have this idea in Brazil we have only indians and ''african-brazilians'').

Anyone else experienced that? Being confused with someone from a totally different country all the time?

My fiance is always asked if he's Australia. He is British. Although last Saturday, a waitress in a restaurant asked if he was from Quebec!!!!! We nearly died laughing!!!

Hmmmm, I am half Greek and raised in the southern part of the United States (but pre-south-of-the-border major invasions . . not many Mexicans in Arkansas when I was growing up) . . . so I got real confused for awhile when I moved to Texas and people spoke to me in Spanish, LOL!! One of my mexican friends said she didn't understand that . . . my hair isn't black like hers, hehe! But I swear . . . I have ppl walk up to me on the street asking for directions or in grocery stores asking me to read can labels . . . but I dont speak a word of spanish really!!! They even express confusion when I start speaking english back to them . . . sort of like I am one of those early mexican immigrantswho refused to learn to speak spanish, in an effort to assimilate, lol!

Oh, when I am in Egypt, I confuse ppl there because they think I should speak arabic . . . and I get comments about me being "Arabi" all the time. So I must wander around the world in a state of confusion .

So, my husband was asking me if people will be nice to him when he comes because he has heard all the comments about ppl in the States hating Arabs/muslims . . . I told him not to worry . . . I think he looks Italian, hehehehe!!! In fact, I think I'll encourage him to change his name to Massimo . . . Max for short. Yep, I rather like that!! But don't tell him that . . .

I can say when we are out and about everyone is talking to Mian in Spanish like they know he is of Spanish decent. Now he is picking up the language and can say a few phrases back to them. When we say no he only knows a little Spanish they are asking why? When we say he is from Pakistan they look at us in disbelief.

I just get funny looks when I say things like "Pasta".. I say it "pAsta" (short A) like a good little Canadian. Rob laughs each time because apparently it's supposed to be "PAHhhsta" (long A).

Generally people don't ask, but I can tell by the looks on their faces they think I'm from somewhere strange. It would probably make more of a difference if Colorado has a heavier accent (a la Kentucky or Georgia) but it's pretty nondescript.
