I don't know why, but nobody ever asked if I am mexican, or whatever that speaks spanish, because my accent is a bit different, so I've been asked twice if I'm from russia, and one girl said I am tall and I don't have dark skin and that she could never tell I'm from Brazil (people have this idea in Brazil we have only indians and ''african-brazilians'').

Anyone else experienced that? Being confused with someone from a totally different country all the time?

EDIT: what country people THINK you are from, my bad

People normally think Gareth is from Australia, I think because the only foreign accent they can identify is "English" and they know he's not that, so they make a wild guess at an English-speaking country that isn't the US/Canada or England and come up with Australia. Yeah, usually Australia, then England and Ireland probably tied for 2nd, and almost no one ever guesses Scotland, which is the correct answer (although his accent is a little weird, which is probably part of the problem).

My wife has dark hair and dark eyes. Even though she is ethnic Russian she often has Hispanics talk to her in Spanish mistaking her for Hispanic. My wife has commented to me that it happens frequently here in Houston.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

see, nobody ever tried to talk to me in spanish, I'd probably say ''sorry I don't speak THAT''. Once I had a woman talking to me in german because she saw me saying gesundheit to charles lol :P

People always think I am Irish or English... but I come from Scotland.. When I tell them I am from Scotland they say "Oh is Scotland not just part of ENGLAND???" I think the look on my face answers that question for them...

I've traveled the world quite a bit and I'm usually a good educated guesser.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

People are always guessing Lai's home country wrong, and that includes other Asians. Vietnamese people try to talk to her in Vietnamese, Philipinos talk to her in Tagalog...she's been mistaken for Japanese....only once since she arrived here has someone outside of our church (which has a lot of Taiwanese) or a Chinese shopping center has someone actually guessed correctly and spoken to her in Cantonese, and that was just a couple weeks ago :P

Then, last year when we visited her sister in Vancouver, an Indian man thought I was from India

People mistake me for Greek, Hispanic, Pakistani, Arabic, even Caucasian. They think my husband is Italian.

Is that Caucasian as in from the Caucasis Region, or simply "white", as the term is often used here?
