Since starting the K1 process I have being going to the gym at least 4 time a week, for at least 2 hours a time, doing Pilates, yoga ,weight training etc. I am trying to build up core strength at the moment. How long will it take do you think? Anyone else going to the gyms. any fitness recommendations?

Nice. I was a gym rat before I moved to the US. Ran before work daily, rock climbed 5 times a week and alternating rest days with yoga, weight training and TRX. I found that for core work TRX is pretty good but if you want to mix it up and work out muscles you never thought existed, rock climbing (even indoor) is the best. I think if you keep at this regimen of going to the gym at least 4 times a week, you'll see results in about 2 months.

Right now I just run about 8 miles every other day and rock climb (indoors and outdoors) 3 to 4 times a week. I also picked up mountain biking and hiking on the weekends. I'm not used to mountains so I still have to stop and catch my breath once and a while but it's all good.

Keep it up! It's a great way to keep healthy and keeps the mind busy while waiting for paperwork to finish.

Sein oder Nichtsein, das ist heir die Frage.

I broke my humerus last year while rock climbing in the Andes last year. It has taken almost a year to work up the confidence to fully exercise my right shoulder.

I have a great Pilates teacher who puts me through hell, but has made me much more aware of my body. Medical care is expensive in the US so I see this fitness regime as a form of preventative medicine.

eh - before my accident last year - 6 times/week - alternate days of weight machines then running, biking or swimming.

Now that I can walk again ;) I am recently (last 2 weeks) back to the weight machines, and I can speedwalk. Swimming and biking hurts like a mother, still, so I only 'try' to see if it hurts today.

Before my accident I went through 2 sets of P90X for a year -it matched the workout I had at my uni, so I was mentally used to it. IMO, that reconnected my core to the rest of my body - I got thrown from a horse 10 years prior and I never thought to get that stuff reconnected again, ever.

My weight machine regime is easy - about half of what I can lift, but 20 reps in under 2 minutes, each machine, about 14 machines.

I'm a fan of pilates and yoga for the womens - my wife has been doing that for the last 3 years, almost religiously..

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

What kind of accident did you have?

Pilates and yoga are great for increasing flexibility and keeping a trim waist. I find just sitting on the floor rather than using a chair great for posture and flexibility too.

Sorry to hear about your injury. I hurt my shoulder early this year after a mountain biking spill and it took me over 4 months to fully recover. I've had minor tendinitis injuries on my left middle finger that I still do rehab once and a while but it hasn't really stopped me from climbing even with the injury. I was of the impression that full rest doesn't really help in strengthening the muscles and tendons, so instead of avoiding the activity I just tone it down and compliment it with rehab. I use exercise bands for rehab and they really work well in strengthening the complimentary muscles surrounding the injured areas. Perhaps a similar regimen will work for you. Of course, I don't recommend it without consulting an expert.

TRX is a type of suspension training tool. It is a type of resistance training that includes a person's body weight for compound exercise movements. It is a good compliment to yoga and pilates and the bands are easy to use and carry around. You should try it.

My kids and I either go to the gym every day or we do some kind of exercise for at least 45 minutes outside the gym.

Since the weather isn't great here all year we fall back on the gym during the winter. I think it's important to do some exercise daily no matter what it is.
