Mat Damon loves public schools, for your kids not his.

One can support gay rights without being gay oneself

Not according to the rationale of some...

You can't be against war unless you have been in one.

You can't be against violence unless you have been a victim.

You can't be for feeding the hungry unless you are starving.

Apparently some can only relate to that which affects them directly; and for them empathy is just another long word, devoid of meaning.

He doesn't like what's going on in public schools so he sends his kids to private schools. Then looks to bring his ideal schooling model to the masses. I don't see anything wrong with wanting this. It would be different if he advocated a type of education for everyone and then sent his kids to something that didn't resemble said advocated education. Maybe he just wants public schools to follow the model of his private school models. What's wrong with that? He obviously believes in the education/goals of the private school.

I think this country's jail system needs to be fixed. Doesn't mean I want to go to jail.

The gist of this thread is that you can't/shouldn't have an opinion about jail unless you are /have been incarcerated...

Ok kiddies - tis a sure sign I'm old - I've no clue what sci-fi tentpole means. No No, don't 'splain it to me. I'm just gonna deal with the fact that I'm officially old.

Maybe he could join up with George Lucas' education foundation and do some real work? That'd be cool, I think so. Don't need to push his own 'idea' about school to the masses, just step up and participate with George.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I don't get where there's a problem with Mat. He's supporting public school, so what? No celebrity would send their kids to public schools just because of the unwanted attention.

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

Absolutely, though you can't credibly claim to support Gay-rights if you yourself do not honor those rights or you don't practice what you preach.

I mean here you have a guy who claims the PS system is great ..... he could not imagine his life without having experienced it... yet when it comes to his own kids, he opts out..... even though he could live in any school district in the country.

So in other words he supports a failed system for people who can't opt out and for him and his.

That's pretty low.

That statement would be correct if you completely misunderstood what he said.

He supports the notion our school system should be far better than what it is.

What do you mean by this?

Maybe one can't truly understand the struggle or POV unless one has personally dealt with it?

Not experiencing the struggle doesn't stop one from truly supporting a cause, though.

Oh I agree. Also, people can experience things via a family member or loved one. As in, sexism or racism directed at my wife affects me as well.
