The greed has gotten out of control. You hear "how can we make money?" I wonder, "Why did you build your business model on f*ing your employees?" As a corporation with a hiring standard of part time only, you are telling the American people, well we'll kinda feed this person but you're on the hook for all of their healthcare. I'm just going to give some ideas and thoughts and ask a couple questions

Questions first.

Why is Cinnamon working for so little? No it is not because she is black, Marvin, I am sure there are blacks working at Costco.

Likewise the guy at Walmart. I'd be knocking on Costco's door once a week.

Ok, I can answer that...or offer some answers...

1. Some people, black or white or hispanic are not worth minimum wage and are actually overpaid at that rate. Cinammon might be one. ???

2. While Cinnamon has no company benefits, as a single person in Vermont she would be eligible for about $1800 per month in subsidies at that wage (actually at $8.25 which is inimum in Vermont) at $22.00 per hour she gets nothing...even if she has 2 children.At $22 per hour she is making $3813 per month before tax and has to buy her own health insursance with deductibles, co-pays and stuff. At $8.25 an hour plus her subsidies she is making $3230 per month and has no medical insurance to pay, no deductibles and no co-pays. She is actually money ahead. at minimum wage and does not have to worry about getting her hours cut as that would just mean a corresponding increase in subsidies. YMMV depending on state. I am familiar with Vermont benefits, Alla does a lot of interpretations for DCF and has their literature.

Does this mean we are subsidizing Wendy's employees and Wendy's is keeping the profit? YES. Is that bad? Maybe. But if we make Wendy's pay more...and it would need to be at least THREE TIMES MORE in order not to hurt Cinnamon. she needs that much to break even, remember? IF they did that you think that hot n juicy Wendy's double burger is still going to be the same price? No, of course not, so you will pay for Cinnamon's benefits when you buy a burger. If you do not buy the burgers, Cinnamon gets laid off and has NO job.

BEST solution for Cinnamon? Use the Wendy's job to get experience, work hard, get a good reference and gain some skills which you can use at your next job...maybe Costco?... and go to school at night to further your education.

Cinnamon's WORST solution? wait for government to force an increase in your wages and decrease in your benefits.

Next possible solution. Rather than make these type jobs acceptable to people because they can get subsidies why not reduce the subsidies? I mean there are two ways to reduce what WE have to subsidize Wendy's. They can raise their wages or we can reduce subsidies to their employees which will cause the employees to push for higher wages and demand drives supply. OR we can keep the subsidies the same and require that Cinammon go to school also so eventually she can tell Wendy's to stuff it.

Next topic. Business models

Every business makes a business model that suits its own needs. Low wages generally result in high turnover. Turnover costs money but when the business has been automated enough...training expense is minimal and costs less than the unifroms they give out. Seriously. Customer service suffers a little but again, exposure to customers has been reduced over the years by automation and drive thrus. So they reach a balance of wages and turnover that is accpetable to them and stick with it. Good news? The high turnover results in jobs always being open and these jobs can be entry level jobs for teenagers. If Cinammon is the age she looks and going to school and not making babies yet, then a minimum wage job is fine for her to gain experience. Hey we all gotta start somewhere. she could be a rich white kid and being living with Mom & Pop and just making some "bling" for the summer between semesters. She could be the wife of the Hispanis guy making $22 an hour with benefits and is just killing a little time while her hubby is at work. Mayber her income is their "fun fund" and pays for their European vacation. I mean, families have business models also. at any rate, few people try to raise a family on Wendy's pay and if they havea family they get WAY more subsidies.

Costco has found it is profitable for them to retain employees because of specialty training (lift equipment operation for example) or to offer a higher level of service to their customers who actually get out of the car and walk around in the store. what ever it is I can assure you it is not because of some sense of responsibility to the public...though they will SAY that, it is the best for their bottom line for whatever reason.

As for healthcare...Look, all of you who support Obamacare (a true disaster) would prefer "single payor" which means we are all going to be on the hook for everyone's healthcare anyway...and thats what you really want. Its what I want and it is what we will have in Vermont! So what's the phony outrage over that? You WANT the government to provide everyone's healthcare. The best way to do that is for Obamacare to fail. I think it is planned for anyway. These exchanges cannot possibly work for profit driven insurance companies. They will withdraw and the government will say "See...we told you so" At least our Senator had the balls to propose single payor only to get it shot down...by Democrats

As explained above, you are going to pay for Cinammon's health care either way...or the stockholders are. "Wendy's" is not going to pay, they just pass on the expense. Individuals are the only ones that pay for anything.

Sept 3rd! 3 day stops in Vienna and Geneva on the way! Two favorite cities though the Swiss have a national OCD about being clean. It is almost funny. I like that they are armed to the teeth and no one messes with them.

But that was Alla that posted that. She reads over my shoulder sometimes and feels the need to jump in. Sometimes what I type is what she tells me to say. But not always. She isn't going to work either, she is going back to school but she had no idea Costco paid that much...RNs start at about that in our area, but they also get differentials and stuff and most make $25-28 right out of school.

I am going to guess that Costco in Vermont does not pay $22/hr. I have heard they are about the top paying retail type employer, though.
