What's behind Canada's improving crime stats?

Not sure I follow you. I'm slow like that. Canada has had a massive decrease in crime just like the U.S. has. Yet, I don't think that firearms are nearly as prevalent there as they are here. I thought your mantra was always more guns = less crime. That doesn't seem to be the case in Canada, unless I'm missing something.

That has never been my "mantra" and I have said so many times. Mr Big Dog says that is my mantra but I do not accept assigned mantras and I do not defend them.

My mantra is that gun laws have NO affect on crime. Each time I mention that Vermont has low crime, the haterz jump in and point to all the other reasons Vermont has low crime that are NOT related to guns, except anything related to race which no one has the balls to mention, but these same geniuses (genii?) then propose to fix crime problems with GUN LAWS!

The same geniuses (genii) have no clue what the existing gun laws are, how guns function, what the features are they are talking about and demonstrate that over and over...but say we need more gun laws or to "ban" something they think is ugly. "I have no f*cking clue what the laws are but we need more!" "I have no f*cking clue how a gun works but that one is black and ugly and must be bad!"

My mantra is, has been and always will be...GUN LAWS do not fix crime. It has nothing to do with guns or the numbers of guns owned. I believe it does have something to do with the fact that anyone in Vermont CAN be armed and no one knows if they are, but seriously that is just a factor.

I can tell you that a huge factor is that there still exists a belief that hurting people, stealing, robbing and generally acting unpolite in line at the deli is not acceptable and bad for your karma. It becomes a true pain in the @ss at four way stop signs "Will you GO Already!!!!!!!" The local museum can leave a donation pot on the sidewalk and no one takes the money. You get into trouble on the road and someone will stop to help you. GZ/TM will not happen because GZ would have walked right up to TM and said "Can I help you? Are you lost?" what would happen? TM would say "No, I live right over there" OK, cool, have a good night. I don't lock my doors, I can leave the wondiws open from May until October...unless it rains. Screens are a pretty good security system. Keeps the squirrels and raccoons out.

There are no laws for that. But just in case, we have guns.

What do you think is the reason for low gun crime in other countries, if it has nothing to do with the guns themselves? Honestly curious.

That's what should have happened. There's no reason as to why it didn't. GZ had the opportunity.

Gah, I'd gone so long without talking about this too.

Okay, maybe like three days.

Penny it is like taking statics from a country with low number of cars and saying they have less number of car wrecks.

It's not like Canada doesn't have its share of guns. It does.

But with them come rules and regulations that can't even be considered here.

Not if you get them at the duty free shop at the border. At least that's how it used to be.

Could be. Alla buys her favorite perfume at that shop, the one at the LaColle/Champlain crossing. TBH I was buying my cigs in Ukraine the last few years I smoked. $8/carton for Marlboros. Right now they are about $10 per carton. 8 UAH/pack at the kiosk on the corner. 8.1 UAH per 1 $. I was smuggling back bunches of them, Alla put them in her closet and "sold" them to me for $6 per pack which went into our vacation fund. It always covered my ticket to Ukraine! laughing.gif

When I quit smoking she said I could not go to Ukraine any more since I could not pay for my ticket with savings on cigarettes laughing.gif I don't know what they cost in Quebec now, I heard something like $10 but that is for 25 in a pack. I think they go for something like $9 per pack in Vermont now, a little cheaper if you buy a carton.

Percentages should suffice in that case.

It was $10-$11 a pack when I lived in Quebec in 2002/2003. I'm sure they are way more than that now. You do get 25 to a pack though. Although they are DuMarier or some other brand I couldn't stand. You couldn't get Marlboros in Quebec for some reason. I've been to some real $hitholes in the world, and I could always get Marlboros. Marlboros are running about $6 a pack here in Texas currently.

Because Canada doesn't have Fox News, The NRA, The Tea Baggers or the GOP.

Meaning that they are slightly more evolved than this country.

Maybe that are the real "God's Country"?

I don't watch the news here, so I have nothing to compare it to... but the news in Canada is f*cking boring.

Unless something major happens, it's a lot of fluff.

I mean, this is a "Sun" publication, so it's as close to a tabloid as a newspaper can get, but take a look at the major stories on this website.

I quit smoking in 1998, but I've seen Marlboro's going for $9.50 a pack in Washington.

My ex can't pay any child support, yet she can afford a pack a day. Go figure.

Gah, I'd gone so long without talking about this too.

Okay, maybe like three days.

But what should have happened is not the same as being within the law. The law is the same in Vermont as it is in FL. With two differences...GZ would not need a license to carry the gun and TM could also have been armed.

The legal age for carrying concealed in Vermont is 16. Anyone over age 16 can do so. I am absolutely convinced that the results would have been far different, simply because I have seen it so many times. GZ would respect that TM could be armed and approach him repsectfully, even if he was suspicious, the approach would be polite. He may even say from a distance..."hey there! You OK? Its bad weather, have you got a place to go?" Maybe he would have even pulled up in his truck and rolled down the window and called out to him. I would probably do that, I hate to get rained on when it is cold. If I was attacked I would kill him just as soon as if he was white, but I would avoid being attacked and try to offer a friendly way to resolve the problem. And yes I would call the police as GZ did, but if I felt it necessary to get involved I would just be right up front about it so everything is clear and not agressive/suspicious or dramatic.

Alla and I often take walks late at night, just because we like to. 2am-3am...why not? walk back 2 hours from downtown at 1am...why not? It is not unusual for a car to slow down and ask "You guys OK? Need a ride?" I do not think they believe we are suspicious, maybe they think our car broke down. Who cares? We are not crimnals and they are not creepy-@ss crackers, no one needs to die or be attacked.

There is no legal penalty for bad judgement. And GZ was within the law so he walks. But i am telling you that stuff does not happen in Vermont.

There are factors at work in FL that made that not happen. You cannot legislate a change of those factors.

You should not have to think that someone COULD BE ARMED in order to approach them respectfully and politely.

Yeah whenever I watched CTV or whatever it was called, it always seemed to be about what was happening in the U.S.

The US is full of news you just can't make up. I don't remember any news from the US when I was living in Canada, other than the major stuff that made worldwide news.

But generally Canadian news is boring.

I didn't watch it that much. I was scamming DirecTV when I lived there like every other Canadian so I pretty much watched U.S. programming.
