UK Yankee

You need a fairly serious income now to sponsor a foreign spouse.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I'm sure you have good reasons to want to move back to the UK but one thing to bear in mind: If you leave the US now for a prolonged period of time (i.e. make somewhere else your main homestead and spend the majority of the year there) it's not unlikely that your greencard will be considered "abandoned" and if you choose to move back to the US at some later point you will have to apply for a spousal visa for the non USC which will again be a lot of time and hassle and potentially time apart.

There seems to be a way to apply for re-entry but you should check out the conditions for that if you want to keep that option open.

Personally, my husband and I decided that I'll apply for US citizenship once I'm eligible so we could move somewhere else and back to the US should we so desire in the future.

All of this might not be important to you but if that wasn't on your radar it's something worth bearing in mind I think...

Good luck!

If you need to move back for family reasons you may not want to wait a couple of years but if you had the option of the UK spouse getting their US citizenship before moving back to the UK it would mean that if you wanted to come back to the US in the future you would not have to go though all the immigration hassle again.

Edited to add - I see someone beat me to exactly the same thought!
