I'm in a bit of a pickle and would appreciate any information that you can share with me.

Three days ago I recieved approval for my permanent residence status ( I-485) adjustment here in the USA (New Hampshire.) Unfortunately, sometime between then and now, I lost my passport (we suspect it fell out of my purse but we went to several stores and malls in both NH and MA since the interview and have no idea where that was lost.)

The situation is - the passport was issued in my maiden name, I was advised to keep it handy and bring it to all my INS meetings (there were several,) and wait for my adjustment of status interview/approval to apply for the passport in my married name.

I plan to notify passport Canada tomorrow about the lost passport - do I need to report that I lost it to the police?

My other question is - now that I'm married, is there a different process now that I have to have my name changed on the passport?

Also - with regards to the guarantor part - I don't know anyone out here who has a Canadian passport and meets all the guarantor requirements. I do know my husband's Doctor, and have known him for more than 5 years - would he be an acceptable guarantor, or does it have to be a Canadian Citizen holding a Canadian passport?

Sorry for all the questions, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It hasn't been INS in years

You'll need to report the lost passport soonish and also complete a declaration of lost passport

http://www.ppt.gc.ca/planification/203.aspx?lang=eng

For a name change you must apply for a new passport, not a renewal

http://www.passport.gc.ca/info/section1.aspx

The guarantor must be a Canadian citizen

http://passport.gc.ca/info/section2.aspx?lang=eng

Good luck, sorry you lost your passport.

Send it back home via priority mail for your guarantor to sign. That's what I did. They sent it all back to me in a day or two and then I sent it off to passport Canada!

Your guarantor just needs to hold a Canadian passport. No longer needs to have a degree or be a doctor or lawyer etc. It makes applying for one a lot easier than it used to be.

You could keep the passport in your maiden name. I still have mine in my maiden name and just bring a copy of my marriage certificate with me if I need it.

You can try. Anyone with a valid or less than 1 year expired Canadian passport can be your Guarantor though. Do you not have a parent or sibling or friend in Canada that can do this for you then send everything off to passport Canada?

I used my little brother but I could have used either my best friend or her husband or my dad or my own daughter who is a Canadian citizen and an adult (I plan to be her guarantor when she renews too). The guarantor doesn't even have to live in Canada

see #7 of the eligibility:

Live in Canada, in the United States or in any of the other areas where submission of the "in Canada and in the USA" application form is authorized (Bermuda, American Samoa, the Midway Islands, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands). It is not necessary that the guarantor reside in the same country as the applicant

PASSPORT HAS BEEN FOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm soooo very happy - the DMV called back and said that somebody had found it in the parking lot, but it was placed in a different spot, and when I called to see if I had left it there, they hadn't realized it was put in the "international/non-citizens" booth. They looked me up and called. I'm so VERY relieved - Thanks everyone for all your help - I'm just glad that I don't need it! :) Great day.

Whewwwww!! Huge relief there!! I lost my wallet with greencard----fellow found it and was nice enough to call 1 of my credit cards to say he had found it!! Still a few honest people out there, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
