I am moving from Canada to the UK for 6 months. However, I do not want to sell my furniture or give it to anyone since I plan on coming back in 6 months. I was wondering, can I move my furniture and my television and my refrigerator to the US and put it in my brothers house without duty so that when I come back, I can pick it back up from him?

Is there any duty or anything?

Which moving company do you recommend?

You indicated that you're moving from Canada to the UK? Did you mean US?

You can only move your stuff to the US duty-free if you are going there on an immigrant visa (or if you're a USC). If so, you just need to cross with your Visa/US passport and provide a list of your stuff (you have up to 10yrs to move your stuff, duty-free).

If you're really moving to the UK, I take it you don't have an immigrant visa to the US...which means you'll probably get questioned a lot as to why you're moving furniture to the US (they may think you are moving there illegally) and IF they do allow you, I'm pretty sure they'll charge duty.

No I do not mean US. I meant UK.

Well I do have immigrant visa, but I will have my brother (who is a US citizen) with me in the moving, since I will be leaving my stuff in his house and he will be helping me move.

Thank you for your advice. I appreciate it

If the stuff is not his, they could make him leave it there and not be allowed to bring it across. The only way to move it to the USA is if you're becoming an LPR. The other option is storing it. Check out local storage facilities and their rates.

What if I give him all my stuff for free?

What is LPR?

What if I move to US, can I bring my furniture (my couch and bedroom set) and my television and my refrigerator? If so, what documents will I need besides a list of the furniture that I am moving?

I wont have a lease document or anything for US since I will find a place once I get there

Are you a USA citizen or green card holder?? If not--u can't just move to the USA

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I think you're missing a very important point: you can't just move your furniture to the US UNLESS you are moving there under a US immigrant visa.

A moving company will NOT do it for you unless, again, you are moving there under a US immigrant visa. If you try doing it yourself, whether you're with your US-citizen brother or not, Customs will ask why you're moving your stuff there. If all you can tell them is that you want to store it there for 6 months while you're in the UK, they will tell you to turn around.

If you don't like the answers that you're being provided, then go ahead and try to move it there. Rent a U-Haul truck and try it. It'll be fun.

Why are you asking again here?? You already have your very own thread regarding this and have been provided an answer.

Thank you for your answer. I figured different people look at different threads and can give different ideas.

What type of Visa do you have?

First, thank you for your help.

I dont mean to be rude from any of my posts, and if it came out that way, I apologize.

I was just trying to get some advice and help and the easiest/most inexpensive way how to do this move.

Forgive me, I misspoke. I do not have Visa, since I have my Canadian Passport, and I dont think a visa is required to go into US but correct me if I am wrong.
