Guns and stuff

  1. 1. I have a gun on my person. Am I looking for trouble?

    • Yes. You cannot carry a gun unless you are looking for trouble.
    • No. You can carry a gun and go about your everyday business.
    • Maybe. You might do more vigilante style profiling than normal.

I used the FBI statistics, which are you using? It's common knowledge that FBI statistics are just the tip of the iceberg. Most rapes go unreported due to the victim blaming, intimidation, fear of retaliation and stigma that women face when reporting a rape, combined with the general misogynist attitude prevailing in society, law enforcement and courts.

And why does a gun need to be fired to be a deterrent? How is it a deterrent if the perp knows the victim can't fire it for fear of the consequences?

Why does someone have to die or be shot to stop a crime? Because in reality that's just what ends up happening. You are aware of all the shooting deaths happening daily in this country, right? Your theory of deterrence just doesn't work in practice, and people actually die. In huge numbers.

Rape is never going to stop. Why? Are you making sure of it?

Do you advocate a woman's right to kill her rapist? Should she be allowed to "stand her ground" and not face prosecution for such? If so, should a woman carry a gun when going out on a date? When at home with her husband?

yes on all of the above.

The United States of FEAR and Distrust. Who, man or woman, wants to live in this kind of a society?!??

Because brandishing a firearm is a crime. A concealed weapon needs to remain concealed until it is to be used for its intended purpose, which is to launch a projectile with extreme prejudice.

often the act of drawing it makes the bad guy run off, thus a shot isn't needed. should the conceal carry holder then be charged for brandishing?

What's wrong is that they are victimized in the first place. Why should women have to constantly defend themselves against the men in their lives? It's the men who need to stop victimizing the women in their lives!

maybe we should cut to the root of the problem and ban men?

So having men respect women's human rights and not commit violent crimes against them is out of the question? There's plenty of men who manage to do just that. Why not make that the standard?

If he ran off in fear because he saw the weapon, that would meet the definition of brandishing. However, if he saw the weapon before she had a chance to use it, he is just as likely to take it away from her, still rape her, and then punish her for pulling a gun before killing her. Plenty of anecdotal evidence out there that happens more often than not.

Therefore, learn to draw faster, don't hesitate to pull the trigger, and keep pulling the trigger until he stops moving.

Does Nessa carry at home to protect herself from you? Do you carry to protect yourself from her?

my wife isn't involved in this conversation.

fine with me. and for those that don't, how about we allow women the right and ability to defend themselves?

So continue the status quo of leaving women to fend for themselves against "those who don't", instead of affecting real change in society to end violence against women once and for all?

The root cause of this problem is men's behavior, not women's reactions to it.

"When solving problems, dig at the roots instead of just hacking at the leaves." No?

quite the straw man in that first paragraph. i already agreed with your earlier statement - my expansion after that was about the men who don't modify their behavior. i don't advocate leaving women helpless against those who still persist in violence.

Lame answer. A thug pulls a knife on you and demands your wallet. You draw your gun. He runs away. Crime is deterred and no one gets hurt.

So in other words you do advocate accepting a man's choice to not modify his behavior and leaving it up to the woman encountering him to just deal with it to the best of her ability. Why is it an acceptable choice for a man to persist in violence in our society? Sure, it's "frowned upon", but that's about it. Being violent towards women is a choice a man makes. Why is he allowed to make that choice?

Who is advocating leaving women helpless? What do you even mean by that statement?

You do know that it's a provable fact that where women live in a situation where violence against them is likely to occur, introducing a gun into the situation just guarantees that woman is more likely to end up dead? Of course, we could go with the, it's their own fault for living in such a horrific domestic arrangement, or, only a foolish woman would end up in an abusive relationship, or a myriad of other arguments that heap all the blame squarely on the victim and to what end? All in an effort to prove that having a gun is a sensible defensive strategy regardless of whether you have the time or inclination to engage in regular target practice and training? That having guns in houses is desirable? It's an incredibly bizarre argument to make and yet here you are making it.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .
