Guns from out-of-state make up the grand majority of city crimes

That seems backwards to me. As long as there is a demand for something, the supply will be there.

Criminals and sickos love to have guns. That demand will always be there. The only way you decrease the amount of sickos and criminals with guns is by reducing the supply. Surely you are not suggesting that we should make sure that it is easy and convenient for them to get their hands on firearms?

There must be alot of criminals and sickos in this country if there's 300+ million guns. I never suggested making it easier. I just suggested that making it harder will not have any measurable effect.

The NRA is good at creating demand.

I think you give them too much credit.

It's likely too late to do anything about the amount of guns that are here now.

What's truly frightening is how many people seem to like it that way and encourage MORE guns to combat it.

Indeed.

Yes, because everyone knows that the best way to fight a pest infestation is to add more bugs and rodents.

I believe that is the biggest problem.

A large percentage of those are in private collections, which skew the numbers.

What's a large percentage?

On second thought, nevermind. I know you'll just tell me to go look it up. I guess if you believe it to be true, that's all that matters.

It is said that roughly 45% of US households report to have a firearm. There are some 110 million households. That means that less than 50 million households own firearms. That, in turn, means that on average, each household that own firearms own about 6 of them (50 million x 6 = 300 million). If one was to assume that half the households that own a firearm actually own one firearm (I tend to think that would be a reasonable assumption), that would leave the other half owning more than 10 firearms each on average. Those would be collections. And it would mean that 92% of firearms are part of a collection. That would be a large percentage, no?

I already posted that elsewhere.. Ask folks like Charles!, Gary, and Slim, how many guns they have in their collections?

There are more than 129,817 federally licensed firearms dealers in the United States, according to the latest Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives numbers (as of Aug. 1) . Of those, 51,438 are retail gun stores, 7,356 are pawn shops and 61,562 are collectors, with the balance of the licenses belonging mostly to manufacturers and importers of firearms and destructive devices.

Despite the high number of guns estimated to be in the U.S., indications are that gun ownership is actually on the decline. The long-running General Social Survey, maintained at the University of Chicago, has been asking about gun ownership since its inception in the 1970s. It has found that the number of people who say they have a gun in their home is at an all time low – hovering around 30 percent, from a high of 50 percent in the 1970s.

So more than 10 firearms is considered a collection? I would think that if 92% of firearms are considered to be in a collection, that would be a good thing. More than likely if they are in a collection they would be stored and locked up properly. So really by your numbers only 8% of the firearms would be the issue.

What would you say is the threshold to call it a collection?

Those numbers seem encouraging if only 30% of homes have a firearm, down from 50 % in the 70s. I assume they are only counting legal firearms though.

Seems odd to call it a collection at all, based solely on numbers. Arsenal may be more appropriate. When I think collection, I think old antique guns.

It will? You are old enough to remember the fuel embargos of the 70's, the demand for fuel was very high, but the supply was limited and restricted. You got gas when you were told you could get gas, and if you could afford it, not when you wanted it.
