while researching this, i did run across U.S. v. Miller (May 15, 1939) which is rather interesting. kinda puts a damper on the evil AR controversy. i'll have to remember this one.

The Court also looked to historical sources to explain the meaning of "militia" as set down by the authors of the Constitution:

"The significance attributed to the term Militia appears from the debates in the Convention, the history and legislation of Colonies and States, and the writings of approved commentators. These show plainly enough that the Militia comprised all males physically capable of acting in concert for the common defense. 'A body of citizens enrolled for military discipline.' And further, that ordinarily when called for service these men were expected to appear bearing arms supplied by themselves and of the kind in common use at the time."

You've totally ran out of material already?

It's ok, google and talking points can only take you so far. Original thoughts are indeed hard.

What's funny is that you're the one who's crying all the time about what I post. Are you lonely? ;)

What's next, "I know you are, but what am I?" lol

No, not lonely at all. My wife is sitting right here, not in the fish bowl on P. Burgos.

So it's true...you have ran out of material? Hahaha...

If I knew what that was, I'd still be unamused. But I'm sure you know what it is. ;)

The National Guard supplies you with weapons, and discourages you from bringing your own. The Guard traces it origin back to those state militias. So, that sorta puts a damper in that theory. The court may have had a valid argument back in 1939, when few states had an active militia in the years prior to 1939. We barely had a viable Army prior to WWII.

The National Defense Act of 1920, which emerged from the debates of 1919-

1920, authorized an end strength of 280,000

http://www.dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTRDoc?AD=ADA415899 page 14

The numbers were further reduced to below 125,000, including the Regular Army, the National Guard, Reserves, and "Filipino Scouts".

MacArthur’s wishes were finally granted when in 1936 Congress authorized a new

strength level of 165,000. The public began to fear German and Japanese militarism

abroad.

hardly a reason to deny the semi auto version to law abiding citizens - who can hone their skills or maintain their skills should they be called back up.

If they call you or me back up, the US Army is hurting. I don't think our marksman skills would be what they would be looking for, at least not basic rifle skills.

For me, maybe. It depends how short they are on combat engineer officers. Junior officers don't have a high life expectancy.

do they ever in combat?

I don't know about these days. Everybody is so armored up, I would surprised if engineers could actually get anything done. We used to strip down to bare minimum, so we either wouldn't drown falling into the water, or keep from snagging on something that could go boom. You armor guys and the infantry are supposed to keep us safe while we are working.
