How about protecting the owner of the firearm? With a national registry, any peace officer could run the serial number on any weapon he encounters, much like he does license plates and driver licenses, find out who the firearm belongs to, and take appropriate measures, if the person in possession of the firearm is not the one it is registered to.

If you read the actual history of the amendment, you would know it was written to protect land owners from slave rebellions. Those are the "well regulated militias" the founding fathers were talking about. Nothing in the written history supports the gunner nutter argument that the 2nd amendment was written to enable an insurrection against the United States government gets if a faction of the population gets upset at something the government is doing.

The Shay's Rebellion is an example contemporary to the Constitutional Convention, and shows how the term "militia" was used at the time, as a body of armed men raised by the government, under orders from the government, and disbanded when the government was done with them, not joe citizen masturbating to a copy of Guns & Ammo.
