Travel with minors to Canada on Green Cards

OK, this is a little complicated and I would like to understand requirements before I get to the border... idea9dv.gif

We live near Detroit so Canada is an easy drive away. My two step-daughters are 17 and 18, both with green cards and Honduran passports. I know they do not need visas to enter Canada (checked the Canada web site) - but can we go there for a visit without their mother? I don't know the rules for going in and back without having their mother along. (We would only do a day-trip).

On a more general note, what are the travel requirements with them in general? Their mother is in Honduras caring for a sick relative so the girls are with me for now. I know 17 and 18 hardly makes them "little kids" but I am curious about the entire legal nature of the step-father/green card relationship. Any thoughts, suggestions, or experiences? I will be caring for them for a while. They are covered on our insurance, have social security cards, etc. - anything else that might come up?

Thanks in advance for any advice on day-tripping in to Canada... we mostly want to go to "collect" another visa stamp for their passports and be able to see another country! Pure tourist stuff!

If in doubt, bring a signed letter from the mother giving you permission to take them out of the country. But at those ages it's quite unlikely to be an issue.
