Hi everyone,

My interview is on August,15. I'm adjusting from J-1. Birth Certificate is in the list for required documents but the problem is that it's back in my home country. Should it be mailed here with express service or is the copy going to be enough for the interview?

Thank you!

You can submit a photocopy with the initial application, but you should bring an original certified copy to the interview, as USCIS could ask to see it. If they ask and you don't have it they will RFE you for it, and they can RFE you at any point, even at the interview or after the interview.

Given that you'll likely need a copy to show the Social Security Administration and probably some other people too, it would be wise to have a certified copy on hand for your use.

Thank you for the answers!

According to Russian laws your CAN'T send birth certificates abroad. You can try to but if they check the envelope at the customs (which they usually do) and find there your birth certificate it will be sent back. The legal way is to get it thru a Russian embassy in the us. I think it costs 45 dollars.

Though ask first dhl in Russia if they agree to send your bc abroad, sometimes they do.

There is no such thing as can't in the FSU. The correct terminology is "How much will that cost me?" yes.gif But I agree that getting one thru the local embassy maybe the quickest and easiest and cheapest way to go.

Good luck,

Dave

Ok...better to say forbidden. It's the law...there is a list of russian documents your are forbidden to send abroad from Russia which applies only to Russian citizens of course. Russian post offices won't accept her bc for sending abroad, dhl is the only carrier in Russia that I heard sometimes does that. and it's not the matter of How much, it is the matter of How legal it is....I'm saying that as a Russian lawyer.

Since the author is Russian I just thought she should know. You won't be arrested, you just won't get the document that's it.

Going through the embassy would be the longest way. I did so and been waiting for mine two months now

We're going to use UPS. By the way, they didn't say it's illegal to send BC abroad. it's whether they don't кnow about such a law or they just don't care...

Well, we'll see...

Thanк you, pupsicheк =)
