Hi everyone, my husband (US citizen) just called out electric and gas supplyer in order to add my name to utility bills. Well, he was told that it is not possible. Only one name can be on utility bill, not both. We are very worried as we are still awaiting to attend the interview and the only thing we have with joint names, is out leas agreement. We would like to know how everyone else is getting their names jointly on all utility bills.... Many thanks

Are they telling you this because it can't be done, period, or because there's no SSN?

I'm curious because I was wondering the same thing myself. I haven't heard of two names being on a utility bill before getting involved in this... even when I had roommates there was always just one name on the bill.

What about bank accounts, insurance, etc?

We ran into the same problem when my husband tried to add me to his utility bills. So, we focused on getting my name on other things. We opened a joint bank account. He added me to his credit cards. He added me to the deed for the house. He added me to his life insurance as his beneficiary.

Hope this helps!

IR1/CR1 Visa - We are using a lawyer!

Embassy: Montreal, Canada

USCIS

22 Jan 2013 -- packageSent
31 Jan 2013 -- NOA1 from NBC

6 Mar 2013 -- I130 transferred to Orlando local field office (which started the whole nightmare)

Mar 2013 to October 2013 no one would tell us where our case was or what was happening. I suspected the whole time it was just sitting in a corner somewhere in the Orlando field office. I was pretty much right.

October 2013 - get congressman involved. Congressman asks USCIS repeatedly about our case but they won't even tell them anything.

31 Jan 2014- finally get NOA2!!!! (we think the nightmare is over!)

NVC

Our case was not sent from the Orlando field office as it should have been. The nightmare continues. We kept calling NVC and asking if they received our case, and they always said "NO" and that we had to wait 90 business days for it to be received. We called USCIS during this time and they kept telling us it had been sent. After the 90 days of agonizing frustration, NVC then started telling us we had to wait 120 business days. I got our congressman involved again, and they told the congressman it was sitting at the Orlando office this whole time (just as I thought it was!).

22 Apr 2014 -- NVC received
16 May 2014 -- NVC case number assigned
24 May 2014 -- AoS and IV bills paid

28 May 2014 -- Sent AoS and IV Packages

6 June 2014 -- documents scanned

18 July 2014 -- false checklist from NVC

21 July 2014 -- Case complete

28 July 2014 -- receive case complete email from NV

30 July 2014 -- interview booked! September 11 here I come!

We had a similar problem and were told it wasn't possible, however, you can ask to have your name added in the address section (the mailing address portion). That is what we did. The account is still under my husband's name but it has both of our names in the mailing address portion of the statement. We also sent our lease and joint bank account.

We had no problem at all. All of the utility companies did it with just a phone call, only the phone company required a SSN. Of course, our state uses utility records as proof of residence, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Hi, and than you for responding. They told us that it cannot be done, that only one person can be on the electric/gas bill, and no, they did not ask if I had SSN. However, my husband managed to put my name jointly on our telephone bill, and we r just waiting for the bill to be send by post so we can have this aditional proof that we r living together.

Thanks a lot! What a great idea, perhaps we will do just that too! As for joint bank account, we cannot do that yet as I still do not hve my SSN and they told us that I must have that in order to join my husband Bank account.

Hi Tina,

USCIS looks for flags for fraudulent marriage. Thus, if you take utilities bills on your names i.e. one on yours and the other on his, it suffices their requirement. It proves you are both living at the same address and have skin in the game. This combined with your lease where it shows both your names is good enough. It is very common for a bill to have just one persons name on it. Be calm and carry on... You'll be just fine.

Thank you! We will do that. Meanwhile we have managed to add my name to our phone bill payment.

  • 4 weeks later...

I had this worry to, also in Massachusetts, but it wasn't an issue at interview in Lawrence they never looked at anything in our evidence folder, a quick glance at some pictures. I waited until the day I applied for my social security number to ask in the bank what I needed to open an Account, TD were happy to open it there and then and just filled in a form for the IRS.
