I just bought an LCD HDTV myself -- 42" Sharp Aquos LC42D62U (full HD spec, 1080p,

1920x1080 resolution). The store had a bigger one (46") on display and the picture

was absolutely stunning! It was also "on sale" for $1,999.99 which ended today.

I sort of bought it on the spur of the moment without doing much research, so I hope

it's a good one! Anyone know anything about the AQUOS D62U series?

You can not go wrong with 1080P. That is about 2 million pixels. Unfortunately it is so advanced that you will only benefit from it by using a blue-ray, HD-DVD player, XBOX 360 or PS3.. I don't believe any cable or satellite company offers that high resolution yet..

Piss me off..

I had a Motorolla regular HD Box. The picture was awesome. It got a little flakey so I traded it in for a Scientific Atlanta DVR. The picture on it is #######. I have been bitching and bitching but the cable company has nothing else.

Same thing happened to me. I now have the shitty Scientific Atlantic HD DVR with Comcast...

Do you have the 8000 or the 8300? I actually like the 8300 a lot but you're right. The 8000 sucks.

8300. I had the 8000 and that was really bad. I guess the real problem I have is with comcast as they do not transmit the first 99 channels in digital.

The one benefit of the 8300 is that you can attach a SATA HD and get quite a bit of extra DVR space.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

No, and it will be a damn long time before they do too. The amount of bandwidth it takes ESPN to broadcast their 2 720P programs in MPEG 2 takes every bit of their Satellite transponder space, so they would pretty much have to lease another transponder or cut one of their channels to broadast in 1080p. Over the air Network broadcasters use their entire spectrum to produce one 1080i or 720p program in MPEG 2 also. The only economic way would be to convert to MPEG 4, but with every cable box out there completely incompatible with MPEG 4, broadcasters are stuck with a very small market of subscribers who would have the equipment to pick up the signal. So, in order to get 1080P from anyone now, broadcasters are going to have to sacrifice other channels and that's simply not going to happen.

Don't worry. That won't be for long.

Thanks dalegg.

While we are on this entertainment/techie topic....

I know there are doo-dad machines out there that can transfer a VHS tape to DVD. What's the right name for one of those things and how much do they cost?

My husband is a Doctor Who freak and would love to own all the episodes. The DVD's are hideously expensive ($25 to $40) but VHS copies can be had on Ebay for a song (like $2). I'm wondering if it might be worth our while to transfer old VHS to DVD and build his collection that way.

LOL - I just re-read this post - can you tell I know SQUAT about electronics......

We bought a DVD-R (DVD recorder) a couple of months ago...we absolutely love it over taping from the VCR (of course, the fact that the VCR had started to die on us might have something to do with it...).

Our DVD-R has an auxiliary port in the back to be able to hook up a VCR or videocamera directly in for recording. We spent about $150 on the recorder, but I've seen other models as low as $100. Might be something to look into, especially in the after-Christmas sales.

(Wow, I really wanted to type Boxing Day sales there... :crying: )

Electricity is really just organized lightning.

The machine your looking for is actually a doo-hicky not a doo dad.

Hahahahaha....so if I go to Circuit City and ask for a doo-hicky they'll know what I need?

Ask for one of these Becca.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. So, Gary....

In our home-theater system we presently have a VHS VCR. We could replace it with the one you linked up for me, right? And it would record VHS to DVD?

The way our system is configured right now, the VCR is linked up to the receiver and the VCR sort of acts as the cable box.

Yes, you could do it that way. Or, if your VCR is working well for you then you could just get a DVD recorder and hook it to your VCR. Either way you could dub your tapes over to DVD.

This one would work in that way.

Not at all. They are doing just the opposite. The government already passed a rule stating that by July 1, 2007, cable operators must reengineer cable boxes to utilize a CableCARD that performs the same security and descrambling functions that current “integrated” boxes perform.

Furthermore, you can already purchase a dual tuner DVR TIVO DVR from Circuit City.

Samsung is now producing two-way television sets that will integrate your cable guide data and VOD access via cable card that you will be able to purchase in local stores next year. They are already available in New York City.
