We too picked up an HDTV a few months back , I *think* it's a Sharp Aquos 37". We then had to switch cable boxes, I too like the nifty TiVO like features. Our area only offers 5 channels in HD so far which is sort of sucky. I really don't notice the difference, it must be a man thing ;)

It is not a man thing. The difference is remarkable and not subjective. Anyone can tell the difference between an HD picture and a non HD picture. If you are not seeing a difference you have a configuration issue of some kind.

When plasma tv's first started to become readily available, the bulb life was anywhere from 5000-8000 hours while LCD's lasted 20000-30000 hours (do the math, that's a long time). Since then, Plasma technology has increased and the bulb life has grown for new plasmas where they now last just as long as LCDs. People still cling to the old facts but it just isn't true anymore.

The viewing angles for plasmas are much better than a CRT. I could watch my plasma from the side of the TV and still see the picture.

Interesting. Thanks, Matt. Plasma TV's are more expensive, yes?

:P hehehe... This reminds me of what my life drawing teacher would tell us when looking at the model - "Blur out yours eyes to see the whole thing instead focusing on the details."

Plasma TV are generally cheaper than LCD. They have made a lot of progress to to prevent Ghosting( watching a logo then the logo kinda stick to the screen never goes out)

On average now an LCD will last you 7-9 years if you are a heavy couch potatoe, otherwise longer, the CCFL diode on the LCD last a lot longer. Prices have dropped by a lot specially in the 37-42in market, the competition is stiff as the new 1080P technology is making its way on the market.

I have a 42in spectre that i bought from costco online, with Dishnetwork HD, it works like a charm, and when you play a 1080I source like an Xbox 360 or Blue ray it's like being there in person.

Gone but not Forgotten!

I don't know anything about this stuff.

Don't you have to receiving an HD signal for the picture to be better?

I'm not sure my cable company broadcasts in HD yet....

If I just made a stupid statement somebody tell me what to ask my cable company.....

I got myself a present last year. 50" Pioneer Elite Plasma HDTV. It's rated for 60,000 hours life. So not to worried about buying another one anytime soon. It's amazing! I'm still like the guy in that commercial sometimes staring at with my mouth open while my house floods.

Rebeccajo most cable company have an HD package. Mine has like only 6 channels that are always in HD. But then you will find that the networks will broadcast certain shows in ER, 24 are a few I like that are in HD. And then most sports anymore are broadcast in HD.

I got a look at a 1080p plasma (can't remember the brand exactly) in Best Buy's show room yesterday. It was something like a 50 inch screen and they were playing Ultra Violet in 1080P. My God that is a clear picture. Didn't think I'd really see that much difference between 720P and 1080P but it will knock your socks off- for a mere $9500.

Thanks dalegg.

While we are on this entertainment/techie topic....

I know there are doo-dad machines out there that can transfer a VHS tape to DVD. What's the right name for one of those things and how much do they cost?

My husband is a Doctor Who freak and would love to own all the episodes. The DVD's are hideously expensive ($25 to $40) but VHS copies can be had on Ebay for a song (like $2). I'm wondering if it might be worth our while to transfer old VHS to DVD and build his collection that way.

LOL - I just re-read this post - can you tell I know SQUAT about electronics......

Gotta agree on the HDTV, Carol and I got a 32"inch samsung slim fit ,And OMG the color is awsome. The discovery channel in HD IS SO FREAKIN NICE, Football games in HD WOW! Still need to check out the bikini girls. Gary get Luz a HD vid Camera

Yeah, I just bought a 30 inch Samsung Slimfit HDTV and I love it. Pound for pound, CRT's still can deliver the best picture, all things being equal (resolution, etc). I'm glad Samsung found a way to diminish the CRT size and make it a flat screen.

I just bought an LCD HDTV myself -- 42" Sharp Aquos LC42D62U (full HD spec, 1080p,

1920x1080 resolution). The store had a bigger one (46") on display and the picture

was absolutely stunning! It was also "on sale" for $1,999.99 which ended today.

I sort of bought it on the spur of the moment without doing much research, so I hope

it's a good one! Anyone know anything about the AQUOS D62U series?

You guys are throwin out numbers and acronyms like it's a foreign language. :P Is a CRT like a tradition type tv? If so, you guys are both confirming what I've noticed - the color saturation on traditional tv's just cannot be beat - at least I have yet to see a flat screen do it - especially when you see black on the the screen - it's not solid black.

Piss me off..

I had a Motorolla regular HD Box. The picture was awesome. It got a little flakey so I traded it in for a Scientific Atlanta DVR. The picture on it is #######. I have been bitching and bitching but the cable company has nothing else.

Same thing happened to me. I now have the shitty Scientific Atlantic HD DVR with Comcast...

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Do you have the 8000 or the 8300? I actually like the 8300 a lot but you're right. The 8000 sucks.
