I am so glad Luz talked me into buying my own "early" Christmas present. I got a 27" LCD HD TV for my bedroom. I just got the cable company to hook up the HD DVR box. That is also very cool. Just like a TIVO. So far my favorite show is Bikini Destinations on HDNet. WOW Bikini's in HD! Gotta love it!

Congratulations on your purchase, Gary! :star:

Maybe I'm just behind on the times, but everytime I'm at Costco and I look at the flat screen TV's, the picture just doesn't seem as vivid as the regular TV's. Are there some brands out there to avoid?

It all depends on what they are using as a source in the store. If they hook them to a regular antenna or a plain old VCR it will look no better than a regular TV. They look outstanding when hooked to a HDTV source like HD cable or satellite. Mine is a Westinghouse but any name brand is OK. Just make sure it says HDTV and not EDTV.

Well, from what I've seen the lines are crisp, but I have yet to see one with the kind of solid, saturated picture of a regular TV when you put them next to each other. Also, it seems that most, if not all, when viewed from an angle are less visible (which is true for LCD computer monitors as well). I think it's cool that they are flat and I love the new aspect ratio, but the richness of the picture seems weak. Another issue that I've read is that LCD's will fade over time just as laptops do.

Its a Motorola Dual tuner DVR box. All the bells and whistles. It can record 60 hours and you can watch one thing while recording another. Very cool.

Mine has the brightest, most vivid color I have ever seen. It has a 170 deg viewing angle. It is worth every penny I paid. From what I am told it is the plasma TV's that fade over time, not the LCD's.

Ah, ok. Maybe someday...after Jinky is here and she's working I'll look into them more closely. I'm so broke right now, when I go to KFC I lick other people's fingers. :P

When you are able I do reccomend it. I paid $620 with a $150 rebate. So the final price is $470. I was hoping for the 32" one at the same price but those went really quick. I can't wait for Luz to get here and see it.

Wow, that's cheap! :o The prices really have dropped! Still...and sorry to be a stickler :P ...my 21" Panasonic that I bought 4 years ago from Costco for $200 has a beautiful picture. I only wish it was wide screen. I think it's got a lot of miles left in it.

When plasma tv's first started to become readily available, the bulb life was anywhere from 5000-8000 hours while LCD's lasted 20000-30000 hours (do the math, that's a long time). Since then, Plasma technology has increased and the bulb life has grown for new plasmas where they now last just as long as LCDs. People still cling to the old facts but it just isn't true anymore.

The viewing angles for plasmas are much better than a CRT. I could watch my plasma from the side of the TV and still see the picture.

Piss me off..

I had a Motorolla regular HD Box. The picture was awesome. It got a little flakey so I traded it in for a Scientific Atlanta DVR. The picture on it is #######. I have been bitching and bitching but the cable company has nothing else.

I hate cable for this reason. I just hate it. People complain about all sorts of stupid tech issues but Cable boxes have to be the absolute worst rip off pieces of #######.

At least you got a good one.

Yes, they have improved a lot. They are still not there yet in terms of picture quality but for the average viewer they are just fine. And even the best CRT was 40", at present the biggest CRT is 34".

The XBR34 wide screen is only 1000.00 now :-) I remember lusting after it when it was 2999.00.
