Hello fellows - I was confused on what forms to use for our case. I'm the son-in-law of the petitioner, willing to help my mother-in-law for affidavit of support. My mother-in-law is unemployed. The only problem was, I just found out that son-in-law is not considered a household member. For my wife, can she use form I-864A as a household member of her mom since she's her daughter? If so, her income alone will not be sufficed to meet the poverty requirements. We need to combine our income to meet or exceed the poverty requirements. So my question is, can I use I-864 as a joint sponsor for my mother in-law even we live in the same house? If I use my income alone for 10 household members including the intending immigrants, it would not be enough to meet the poverty. As I said, my wife's income and mine will exceed the poverty. How can we do this? Me and my mother-in-law should use I-864 and wife should use I-864A? Is my wife's income as a household member will be used to supplement the gap of my income to meet or exceed the poverty requirements for 10 people? Please help.

"Have faith in God, Jesus answered. I'll tell you the truth. if anyone says to this mountain, Go, throw yourself to the sea, and that does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen. it will be done for him. Therefore I'll tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours" (MARK 11:22-24)

I was wondering if my wife can be a joint sponsor for her mom and she will use my income to supplement hers. If this is the case, I need to use 1-864a? Wife and mother will be using I-864? Is my wife can be a joint sponsor for her mom although they live together? Or I can be a joint sponsor and my wife will be my household member instead in her mom household? Is this make sense? Really confusing.., please help!

The petitioner will fill in a I-864 as primary sponsor. Unless she lists your wife as a dependant on tax returns, they are NOT household members.

You, as joint sponsor, fill in a I-864. Your wife, if needed, can file a I-864A as YOUR household member.

I'm still confused with the definition of household member. In our case, my wife's mother is the petitioner with zero income and she is living with us and we claimed her as our dependent on our tax return. Is my wife considered her mother household member or my wife is my household member? Can she be a joint sponsor for her mom and I'll be a household member of my wife? Or I can be a joint sponsor for my mother-in-law and put my wife as my household member? Which is a better approach?
