The well regulated militia should have the right to keep and bear arms...I totally agree.

You should have to pass a proficiency test in order to get a license to carry a gun. And that license must be renewed on a regular basis.
Most states already require a proficiency test that must be renewed ever so often in order to be licensed to carry a concealed handgun. Oddly enough, the states with the strictest laws have the worst instances of gun violence.

Purchase gun insurance.

Liability or full coverage? Most folks' guns are covered under their home owners or renters insurance. I made sure mine are.

An annual registration fee per gun.
That would guarantee we could use our guns in any state, locality, etc., due to reciprocity laws. I kind of like where this is going!

Restrictions to the kinds of guns you can own and operate, as well as restrictions on WHERE you can operate certain kinds of guns.

Already lots of restrictions. You'd like more?

Can't operate a gun if intoxicated or impaired.

Already a law in most states.

Abide by various safety regulations.

Best idea you've posted.

Pay a tax when transferring a gun to a third party.
What would that tax money go to? If it's for something like firearms safety courses, you'd probably have little resistance.

Create a federal agency tasked with improving gun safety.
Have you heard of the BATFE?

A well regulated militia,

Mr. History, you really should get a refund for those courses... and the English classes you took as well.

Well regulated has nothing to do with regulations, rules or laws. It means practiced. The founders actually wanted citizens to not only have shooting irons, but know how to use them - and use them well!

A militia is nothing more than a group of able-bodied men. So to say that modern day citizens have to be part of a militia that has lots of rules or else they shouldn't have guns at all proves that you not only misunderstand the Amendment but also some pretty simple English words.

The real direction in my opinion is to slow the spreading of guns to people who cannot pass background checks. Start with universal back ground checks, make any personal sales illegal unless using a licensed third party re-seller (think of it as an arbitrator) and enforce real laws on people not reporting lost or stolen guns even on a non commercial owner. This will start to decrease the amount of people with unlicensed guns in their hand. Will it eliminate them? No. But we are smart people you and I. And we know that legislation to deal with a problem like this takes time to show any improvement. And any improvement is better than none.

You're basically saying more laws that further restrict sales, transfers and ownership of guns will make it harder for criminals to get them. Did you miss the part about criminals ignoring current laws?

I have ZERO issues with enforcing current laws. If someone breaks the law, they should be tried for it. That's not happening. More laws won't help that happen. Before we pass more laws, lets try enforcing the laws on the books.

Guns shouldn't get a free pass just because it's a right in the Constitution.

So which other rights should we place under scrutiny?

The term “well-regulated” meant something quite different two centuries ago. It is not today’s definition of “controlled,” “limited,” or “restricted” but was instead defined as “having proper kit and provisions” or in the case of objects or machinery, “properly maintained and kept in good repair.”

So, if well regulated means to be in good working order, who's inspecting these weapons to ensure that part of the Amendment is followed? Secondly if your firearm is not "well-regulated" are you by definition in violation of the constitution? Does that carry a penalty?

To ensure the arms are well regulated I say without inspection and approval that this amendment has not been followed.

Face it, those 17 words were a bunch of shite and were meant for someone in the 18th century. Nor did they expect blacks and women to own their own firearms as well.

They couldn't fathom the ways we've abused those few words. It's just like the abuse of many bible verses.

Oh?

I'm trying to find a study that supports what you're saying, but nearly everything I'm reading states the opposite.

Nearly everything? The statistical barn door is wide open.

Dementia's first signs are blurting out random sentences like "strike 2" and considering that part of the debate. Sure sweetie, you've made so many gosh darn good points...no0pb.gif

Since you can't actually own a firearm in the US, maybe you should recuse yourself from this debate? lol

It's not like your invaluable contribution so far will be missed.

I'll do it for you..."strike 3"...see, it's not very creative.

Yeah, that's not the kind of neighborhood I live in. Thankfully. If it was, I'd move.

I was commanded a guard unit in South GA. The local small town had a watering hole in which I met a sweet young girl. We went out for a ride and I pulled in what thought was a road leading into a farmers field. Turned out to be a drive way.

Guy knocked on my door holding a deer rifle. Man he was pissed. I apologized to no end and left very quickly.

Luckily I had not attempted entry .

Something of yours is broken because Chicago, LA and DC aren't states.

For as dangerous as Chicago and LA are, Illinois and California didn't even crack the top 10 in states with the most gun related homicides in 2010.

Louisiana topped the list with the most gun related murders. Tell me how strict their gun laws are.

I remember that. There were quite a few folks here who said the shooter was justified to fire his weapon because the guy in the car rolled down his window.

Some people have a deranged view of reality. wacko.png
