Whatever happened to thank you?

I think this is indicative of how etiquette, and manners in general, are going downhill. People rarely RSVP to invitations as requested, or sent thank you notes for gifts....

I was in Chicago this week and was trying to get onto an elevator were 6 men had already walked on. They all stood there watching me try to get my suitcase and briefcase on with me before the door closed ON my suitcase.... no one reached out to help, or even acknowleged me. I thought that was highly rude and actually said so once the elevator doors closed. No response from anyone.

A week ago, or so, I posted in one thread to someone who was about to get married the following Monday and then wanted to go to their local USCIS office and apply for their green card. It was obvious that no research had been done and they were completely uninformed. My answer was brief, and I explained that they couldn't file so quickly as there was a lot of documentation that needed to be gathered (posted links to the examples) and also because they needed to wait for a certified copy of their marriage certificate to be available....

The OP sent me a PM asking AGAIN, so I cut/pasted a copy of my AOS/EAD/AP cover letter which listed all of the things that I supplied, and suggested that they use it as a checklist as they did their research and completed their forms. Haven't heard a thing since....

I got a PM about 2 weeks ago from someone asking me about travelling with pets. I sent a semi-long reply, with links etc. Haven't heard a thing since. I almost felt like sending another reply saying "you're welcome".

Manners don't cost anything my Nan used to say.

I do get surprised when I'm pm'd out of the blue by someone I don't know. I try to help and then usually never hear from them again. It's tempting to ignore the requests, but I hate to do that if I can really help.... if I can't, I just say so.

8-30-05 Met David at a restaurant in Germany

3-28-06 David 'officially' proposed

4-26-06 I-129F mailed

9-25-06 Interview: APPROVED!

10-16-06 Flt to US, POE Detroit

11-5-06 Married

7-2-07 Green card received

9-12-08 Filed for divorce

12-5-08 Court hearing - divorce final

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

When I get that sort of PM, I aks them to post a thread and I'll be happy to look at it in public.

Makes everyone happy that way.

OMG! LOL--It's the same with holding the door open for people in TORonto -and pretty much anywhere these days. I find myself running to hold a door open for some elderly woman, or family with small children, the woman with babe in one arm and groceries in the other, and then 14 other people walk through as well--and NOT ONE SAYS THANK YOU. Rather than letting the heavy door slam in their faces I say very loudly in the sweetest voice possible "You're very welcome!" I've only had 2 people in nearly 5 years actually turn around and then say thank you. Unreal! The first thing I taught my kids was always say please and thank you. Very simple and it can make a world of difference on how others treat you and how you treat others. The odd occasion some does say thank you at the door--I give them a very happy "Oh, you're so very welcome" and a big smile

Life is short but there is always time for a thank you--even if it is at the end of your original post or to quietly pm it.

So on that note

thanks for letting me rant!!!! and a big big THANK YOU! for helping out a newbie with all her silly questions!
