New evidence in baby shooting points to parents, not black teenagers

(CBS) BRUNSWICK, Ga. - The father and mother of Antonio Santiago, the 13-month-old baby who was allegedly fatally shot in Brunswick, Ga. by two teens in March, had gunshot residue on them the day their son was killed, according to the state's forensic report obtained by CBS affiliate WTEV.

While the fact that Sherry West, the baby's mother, was also shot during her son's killing could explain why residue was found on her, it is unclear how or why the baby's father, Louis Santiago, would have been exposed to gunshot residue.

A conclusion from the state forensic report says, "This supports the possibility that [Louis Santiago] discharged a firearm, was in close proximity to a firearm upon discharge, or came into contact with an item whose surface bears GSR [gunshot residue]."

According to the station, Louis Santiago is currently in jail on charges of aggravated stalking. An arrest warrant from June 6 reportedly says Santiago was stalking Sherry West, in violation of police orders. He was reportedly convicted of the same charges in another case from 2009.

West claims Santiago "went nuts" in the months following their son's murder and violated a restraining order, according to the station.

"He was throwing things through the window and terrorizing me, saying that I killed my baby and it should have been me," West told the station.

West has always maintained that she was walking her baby by herself when two teens, De'Marquise Elkins and Dominique Lang, tried to rob her at gunpoint on a Brunswick sidewalk. The teens allegedly shot her in the leg and baby Antonio in the head. Both are behind bars on charges of murder and are scheduled to stand trial next month.

According to the station, West says it is plausible that she would have gunshot residue on her because she was, in fact, shot. She also says it may be possible that the baby's father came into contact with the residue when he saw her at the hospital.

Police have not named Sherry West or Louis Santiago suspects in their son's murder.

Funny how when the color is reversed your answers are just a bit more skeptical. A few of us said she hired those kids to murder her baby, yet no one even wanted to think that. In fact, you guys just skipped over it to keep harping on the two black gangbangers. It is any different than when GZ's attorney did the same thing going after TM's record?

Two "thugs" show up, demanding money. The woman can't/won't give them anything ... and they decide to shoot her baby in the face? And her in the leg? Why, if they're willing to murder an infant.. do they leave the witness alive and able to identify them?

This woman loses another child to a robbery "gone wrong"?

The fact that her own daughter came out right away and said she didn't buy it must say something.

Yeah it is odd. The only place I can find anything about this, is on websites with an agenda. I'm not saying it isn't true, it's just weird that no one is picking up the story.

Yeah it is odd. The only place I can find anything about this, is on websites with an agenda. I'm not saying it isn't true, it's just weird that no one is picking up the story.

I said that because when Penny posted this story first, before race became a factor, we actually had a decent talk about it. It was about the baby's death, hope they catch the killers and whatnot. Once it became known the alleged killer were black, it was like a buffet in here. Danno was blaming rap music and absent fathers, lost was posting pics of the black guy. Nature Boy then posted the story after it was confirmed the black teens were involved in the shooting and it was the same thing over again. And I believe either CNN or MSN said that the daughter had doubts about the mother's story since the day AFTER the shooting she was asking about how long before the insurance check comes in, one minute crying about it, the next nothing is wrong at all. We pointed this out, but were completely ignored in order to bash those black kids.

Now that every single "left" website is saying there is evidence that she can't explain and the changes of stories is picking up steam, no regular website will report it.

Just like every time there is a killing in the black community, all I hear is where is Jesse or Al, why aren't blacks doing anything about it? When I post the story about the Black Caucus going to Chicago to talk about stopping the violence, the same folks have nothing to say, or just more negativity.
