I am employed by the state and have been for the past 14 months. Since March 2013, there have been problems with the Management Team, they are harassing me and victimizing me due to coming from the UK. They are all of the opinion that they cannot understand me.They have extended my probation and told me that I am not doing a good enough job, and they want me out I am wasting tax payers money.Today I received a letter that they are pending a disciplinary meeting with me and they are planning to terminate my job.

They have not given me a written or verbal warning the management are just constantly harassing me.

Can anybody offer me any advice in the situation, I want to be employed elsewhere not terminated, because they don't like me as I speak differently. They have no right to discriminate against me coming from England.

Thanks

Speak to an attorney well versed in labor law. Likely, you will have to show evidence of discrimination on the part of the management team for any action to be taken against them.

Interesting...they hired you speaking like that & most US companies LOVE to

have Brits & Canadians in their company (look at the networks..Brits & Canadians)

get on prime time news.....with that said could it be U are not the hustling type on the

job, U come off as uppity, U truly do not produce...or is it just a bunch of jealous clannish ppl

just not feeling you?....did U ever have an evaluation done by the company...Seek another

job and don't put them on your resume...fighting to stay with a lawyer will just bring unhappiness

U come off as uppity.... never heard that before. And who says clumsy state government workers dont discriminate against Brits? Go watch Piers Morgan and you will get a feel of America's attitude to Brits.

Keep in mind that during the probation period, (usually 3-6 months) companies have the leeway to fire at will and do not have to issue written warnings etc... It gives them a free hand in let people go without fearing retribution for discrimination or just cause. Look at your letter of employment or employee handbook to be sure what their probation policy is before you shell out money for a lawyer. Sorry for your issues but hopefully there are other places which will embrace your skills and accent where you can work in peace.

Start looking for a new job asap. Identify a co-worker or someone else in there who'd give you a good reference.

Check out http://www.askamanager.org/ it's a great website to learn about employment issues and problems with management.

U come off as uppity.... never heard that before.

Bear in mind there was a "you could" in front of that.

It is a typical British stereotype that you'll see on tv a lot. It would mostly be associated with the "Upper Class"

Left over from when the sun never set on the British empire.

I don't know any British personally to give an opinion.

In Some states such as Texas they can fire you if they don't like the way you comb your hair or for just no reason at all. Ironically these are called "right to work"

states. Extending your probation would seem to indicate they were trying to work with you. They could just say your probation is up we dont want you to continue.

Because you are on probation I don't think you have much chance of fighting it with a lawyer.

You are giving us the impression that their major complaint is the way you talk.

Assuming this is true and they do have trouble understanding you then you can take diction lessons

You could possibly ask them to extend your probation another 3 months while you take some lessons.

It might be too late for this job, but if that is the real reason they don't like you then you should investigate the lessons anyway.

Of course "Your english" is just as good as "Ours" but you live here now and want people to understand you.

There is the chance that they are a bunch of bigots that don't like you just because you are English.

In which case you don't really want to work there anyway.

I don't know how good these videos are but they might help you and you can also find professional lessons somewhere
