Hi all,

I, the K-1 visa holder, just went through the POE two days ago (yai!) and we're now in Denver, CO. I've searched through the forums but all the topics that come up related to this question talk about whether to marry in the US or outside, and it's mostly people that need to decide on what type of visa to pursue.

My question is different, and I understand the answer probably is "don't worry, it's fine" but I just want to make sure.

Once in the US, does it matter where we get married?

My fiancee has family in different states, and at the moment we're traveling visiting them, and to be honest we don't have any hard-coded preference on where the wedding must take place. In fact we're mostly interested in wherever it's more convenient and fast, so that we can move on and I can apply for AOS ASAP.

We don't have a place of residence yet, as in a place where we both are living together, but it will most likely be San Francisco. I was also worried about getting married outside of San Francisco/California, as if that could affect the AOS process, I don't know.

So, would it matter if we got married in Las Vegas or Denver and then lived in California? Does this affect AOS in any way?

Sorry if this sounds silly to anyone, I hope this is clarifying to someone else too.

Thanks and keep it up!

We live in California and traveled to Las Vegas to get married. Nevada makes it very easy to get a marriage license, no blood test, no residency requirements.

USCIS will accept your marriage certificate from Las Vegas, the same as any other place.

Anywhere in the US that you want, as long as the person that marries you is licensed by that state to perform marriage ceremonies.

Thanks for the reply. And now that you mention it, we don't need witnesses right? Only the marriage permit and have the ceremony performed by a licensed person, as you mentioned. Is this correct?

Some states are more lax than others with requirements, but as far as requirements for your visa it does not matter where you get married in the states.

We got married in Vegas - could not be any easier! Lucky for me, I have family there, so it made it a really fun trip smile.png Vegas does not require much - basically proof of identity and then you pay the fee and get a licensed minister to perform the service and file the paperwork. They also have have pre-applications for marriage license that you can fill out online. We did this - so basically we just walked in, they printed out our application we already submitted online, verified identity with a photo ID (his passport/canadian drivers license), paid $65. We spend less than 10 minutes getting the marriage license. We had the ceremony scheduled for the next day and that all went smooth as well. The company we used was so great!!!! We ordered copies of the license and received them about 10 days after the wedding.

Edit: Oh yeah - Vegas requires a witness. Most licensed ministers provide this service either included with the ceremony or for a fee. Our whole ceremony/pictures/witness was $129 for everything.

Thanks a lot! That's very helpful info. If we end up going for Vegas I'll probably ask you for further details ;)
