Hello guys,

My green card is all set to expire on August 4 of this year, but Ive already applied for ROC and have already received a letter that states that Ive been granted another year. Now, Im going to be travelling to europe in October.. I know I wont have the permanent green card by then, but what kinda complications can occur if I travel with an expired green card w/ the extension letter? What if they terminate my status while Im abroad, or ask for an RFE? Even though I'll only be going for a week, but I need to know everything just in case. Is there any way I can get something more secure than just a letter that says my green card is extended.. What if the british security refuses to recognize the letter, then what will I do?

Will appreciate the response, and would love to hear of your stories if you've already done travelling with the expired green card.. Thanks.

The letter is what you need. It is recognized. They won't terminate your status randomly in a week. If you get a RFE you get much longer than a week to respond.

People travel with expired GC + letter all the time. Don't worry.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

The green card + letter = 1 year extension on expiration date.

Last year (or the year before, can't remember) when my wife, step daughters, and I were returning from vacation, the daughters' green cards were expired and we hadn't received the 10-yr. We showed the letter at JFK, and no issues at all. I understand your concern since they will be looking at it in UK. If they give you any #######, ask for a supervisor and have them call USCIS to verify if they don't believe it. Since that extension letter is basically an official document, make sure you have the actual letter, not a photocopy.

But I'm sure they have seen it before, so I would not worry.
