After weeks of countless shooting-related deaths in Chicago, hundreds gathered at Chicago State University on Friday for the Emergency Summit on Urban Violence, led by the Congressional Black Caucus, to discuss finding a solution to gun violence throughout the city and nation.

Although murders and shootings are down this year compared to 2012, it has been difficult to ignore the high number of deaths in Chicago brought on by gun violence — most notably this past Fourth of July weekend in which 74 people were shot.

I guess it is a positive thing that this issue is getting some attention but one thing that sends a red flag is the pre-focus on "gun violence" as if zeroing in on a web addresses the spider.

When you have the issues that chicago has with gun violence being higher than any war zone we are in, starting somewhere is the key. This isn't a gun control issue, this is a killing black kids issue. Babies are shot in Chicago, not stabbed, not beaten to death, shot. 74 people were shot on the weekend of the 4th.

It's vexing that folks here have been talking about that blacks don't care about others being killed, all we care about is Zimmerman and the tea party. Once we start trying to do something, now it's wrong.

Concealed Carry, imposed by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in December, 2012 has reduced homicide 37% already. I guess the Congressional Black Caucus...a group of Gerrymandered, politically neutered, politicians who's purpose is to relieve any other Congress person;s of having to care for "black issues" is having a meeting in Chicago in order to cliam some credit for the reduction in crime.

Some other points...

1. The murders are not "countless", they have an exact count of how many there have been.

2. They know that they have been reduced exactly 37% over the same period last year,

3. The only legislative/litigative difference was the imposition of Concealed Carry in December, 2012

4. Concealed Carry has already saved the lives of dozens of young, back men.

5. That is good news.

Marvin we agree you have to start somewhere. The question is will it do anything, What I fear is that this will be used to fund another program,,,,Don't kill black kids or whatever slick name a promoter wants to throw at it. Millions of taxpayer dollars will be thrown into it and the usual people who control chicago will end up with a bigger bank account. . This is just like the Mafia of yesteryear. Jessie Jackson Jr can sit on the board from prison .His wife can be an in charge of some other part of this program and we can study the problem for the next 20 years. They get to buy another million dollar house on the backs of dead black children of Chicago. . Until the regular black families see that your black leaders care only about themselves and not that child in the streets will anything meaningful be done.

You have a culture of street thug that gets promoted in black society . The flash robs. knock out games and a genuine disdain for authority as shown by travon . (mother could not handle him ,,,threw him out of the house, school could not handle him, missed what over 50 days of school and George did act as some sort of authority in his eyes.... enough to confront George and die from it. My Chinese son never missed a day of school and was often praised on how respectful he was of his teachers and other students. Point being my Chinese son was raised in a culture where to excel in school was a must.. I. posted a long time ago here about tiger moms.. That said I realize his school environment (a Christian school.) did not allow for free expression in dress and looks. One day a week you wore a dress shirt and tie. No blue jeans , We were paying over 6 grand a year. Working 2 jobs to do this. ANY drug use or cheating and you were kicked out for good.(on of off school)... Point is The parents were involved, The teachers were involved and the students were involved. . The students were taught how to preform in a real world setting. Come to your place of employment everyday and ready to work.

The culture of the black child in Chicago needs to be front and center. It will not be done. Now I understand that not every black family has their children going in the wrong direction. But there is enough of a percentage of the population of black children that walk that walk . I never had the urge to kill someone as a child and guns were in our house . At age 13-14 I could use a .22 without any supervision at all. (and did often).... it is the thug culture that needs to be looked at. The black society needs to look at why a 14 year old black child will pick up a gun and is ready shoot someone....From the music to the movies and culture on the streets.

He makes them up. He always does. Concealed carry permits are still not available in Illinois but Gary doesn't care about facts. Never has, never will. Illinois state police doesn't have to even accept applications until next year. The NRA sued over the 180 days the state police has by state law to accept applications but the same US district judge that set the deadline for the state to pass the conceal carry measure on this suit told the NRA to drop dead. But again, facts do not matter to Gary. Ever.

ST. LOUIS — Gun-rights advocates who failed to sway a federal judge into letting Illinois residents immediately tote firearms in public under the state's new concealed-carry law announced Monday they're asking an appeals court to intervene.

The notice of appeal to the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit of Appeals by Mary Shepard and the Illinois State Rifle Association came three days after U.S. District Judge William Stiehl tossed out their lawsuit, siding with the state in ruling it is moot.

The Illinois Legislature passed the last-in-the-nation concealed carry law July 9 against Gov. Pat Quinn's vehement objections. It gives Illinois State Police 180 days to set up a program before accepting applications, plus an additional 90 days to process the forms.

Shepard, in court filings Stiehl weighed, called such a delay unreasonable and insisted it "constitutes an unacceptable perpetuation of the defendants' infringement of the Second Amendment rights." While noting she wasn't challenging elements of the new permitting process, Shepard said her issue was over "the complete ban on carrying firearms that continues to exist until the permitting process is up and running."
