Once you are granted entry into the US, yo can travel anywhere your heart so desires. If you fly, the plane ticket needs to mach the government issued ID you will show the TSA agent. TSA does not check visas nor do they have the authority to do so. Just make certain when the CPB persons grants you entry into the US you look at how long you are authorized to remain in the US--it may be a few days after the conference is over so you will not have time to travel around and this question will be moot.

Good luck,

Dave

The airline ticket or boarding pass must be the same as the name that is on the government issued ID used for ID--i.e. your passport. TSA will check the boarding pass name and the ID you hand them. They must be the same before they will allow you into teh secure area of any airport.

CBP-Customs and Boarder Protection. The people who look over your documents when you enter the US and either grant you entry or deny you entry. They are also teh ones to determine how long you get to stay in the US. It is the date that they stamp in you passport on the visa that matters--not the validity period of the visa. Since you have a conference with specific dates on it, my bet is your visa will be stamped valid for only a few days after the conference to allow you to attend the conference and have enough time to travel back to your home country. I would not make any plans or expect to be able to travel in the US until you see how long the CBP allows your to legally remain in the US,--they determine your length of stay which can be any amount of time--1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 2 months--up to the validity of the visa.

Good luck,

Dave

You can book for whatever you want, asking us if it is OK is irrelevant.

If you book it for a few months after the conferences, what happens is your are only granted entrance for the duration of your conference (which would be my guess hence the date on the annotation)?

I wouldn't book more than a week after the end of the conference

good luck

Okey Dave&Roza

i get the point,

only last thing please,

since i'm going to book should i book for departure 09/08 return 16/08 ?

or it's okay of i book for departure 09/08 and return for the 20/09 ??

thank you

You can book all the way up to 6 months after entry as that is typically the maximum length of time the CBP gives someone on a visa. The October 19th date is the date the visa is good until or the date you must enter the US by--it has nothing to do with the length of stay in the US. So you can enter the US anytime from July 20th until October 19th. The question will be whether the CBP person looking at a visa with that annotation of a conference from August 10th to August 15th will allow you to do. If possible get a flexible ticket and have the return date when you want it and then adjust your plans accordingly to what happens when you enter the US. It may be as simple as the CBP asks why you want to stay for a month beyond the conference and you just state that while you are already in the US, you just want to do some tourist type things. A reasonable amount of time after the conference should be granted. Just be flexible, as you do not know until you arrive in the US how long you will be given.

So if you enter before the conference on say the 8th of August, you could potentially have an authorized stay until February 3rd. Since the visa contains the specific dates of the conference and that is the reason you were granted the visa, your authorized stay will be some reasonable time around the dates of the conference--IMHO. What that is depends on the CBP officer, your plans, and how agreeable the CBP office is with your plans. Like I said be flexible.

Good luck,

Dave

If you got the visa to attend a conference ONLY, and your visa is annotated with the dates of the conference, and you show up with a ticket booked 6 months out, then I doubt you will be admitted.

You are changing your story after you get the visa, first not attending the conference, then deciding to (because you figured you can't get in otherwise), then trying to get a ticket for months.

All this sounds like you are not going to use the visa for its intended purpose.

noMr harpa timsah, i'm not going to book for 6 month out but only
20-30day out, after the conference,
all i want is to visit the city, which is very ligitm
what do you think ?
is it normal to stay one month or 20 days after the conference ?
canadian_wife do you think that, they ll stamp me stay duration only for my conference nothing more ?
other question, how does the agent determin how long is going to authorize me ?

If your visa states the dates of the conference, I will say with 90% certainty that you will get those dates, plus maybe 2-3 days extra to pack up and go home.

Keep in mind, if you plan on asking CBP officer to give you a longer stay, he may not admit you into the US at all since it may look like you applied under false pretenses. Visa fraud. That's what it would look like to me if I was CBP.

Yes, I think they'll give you the days of the conference and that's it. Why do you need a month to see a city? What city is it in?

good luck

I know plenty of business travelers who pack up and leave the day the conference ends or the next day. At most they might stay the weekend IF the conference ends on a Friday. CBP Agents aren't unfamiliar with customary travel habits. You might want to ask around with some other people who are traveling to this conference and see what are their plans.
