If your school is losing certification than it should be the schools responsibility to send out paperwork to other universities to take their foreign students without any additional fees from the students and the school should be covering for it. When Katrina happened Louisiana state schools asked other schools in other states to take their students and let them transfer all their credits which some Universities in North Carolina honored.

When the Trivalley university thing happened, students were rounded up deported or made to wear ankle bracelets until they could enroll in a certified legitimate university. I would find the nearest community college or something that will let you transfer for a small fee. Of course if they are merely renewing their certification for 10 more years, they will probably get it and you might not have to worry about anything. They probably are just being cautious.

When I was on F1 9 years ago, my EAD was tied to my OPT. Your school needs to be notified when you stop being an F1. Technically you are THEIR responsibility until they decide they don't want to be responsible for you anymore. Or when someone else takes responsibility for you, like your company. Or you get an GC. That's how my ISSO explained things to me. I feel like F1 over the years got stricter.

I have to agree with you, Morningmist. That was sort of my point too....this is not the OP's fault and it's not like he wasn't paying attention to renewing his OPT, or anything like that. The school is responsible for either transferring these students, or notify USCIS that we have x amount students (their full legal names) who might going to fall out of status as we're waiting for our certification to get renewed....school cannot just be like "tough luck, buddy! Either transfer to a new school, or pack up and go home".
