Did you guys book medical before your police certificate came back or wait til you had gotten it. And once you'd booked medical did you send off notification of readiness or wait til after you'd actually had the medical?

Can't figure out whether to speed up process by sending it off at once or whether that's too risky

I had my police certificate way in advance, along with all my other documents. So, I was able to book the medical and return all my DS forms on the same day.

You can do it in any order you like, there's no particular reason to do anything in a specific order. Your medical results, if there are no issues, will take 4 working days to get to the consulate, so you can send the first half of your DS forms before the medical, and the rest the same day or the day after the medical. Or, you can send everything before. Or everything after the medical. You probably want to aim to have everything arrive there at least by the time your medical results get there for optimal processing - but sometimes London won't process your forms right away, so you'll you're always at their mercy in terms of speed.

In terms of booking your medical, you'll likely not get an appointment more than 2 weeks in advance, and the police certificate can be ordered to arrive in time for whatever you book. The standard certificate services takes 10 working days and the premium 2 working days.

The only "risky" aspect would be sending anything to the embassy before they have your file. If they don't know about you yet (haven't got your stuff from the NVC), then your forms and medical results could get lost. If you've got Packet 3 (the instructions from the embassy) then just get things back to them as quickly as you can, and that's all you can really do.

There's no real trick to it.

The best advice I can give you is that with the cover letter for the DS-2001 that you put in a wedding date (as suggested on the embassy website). London will make an effort to schedule you an interview that'll help you to meet that date, and they don't require any evidence of the wedding booking. So, even if you're not exactly sure when your wedding will be - you know, have a guess when you would prefer it to be.

Thank you that's great help, only thing that threw me was the two packs of letters?! Iv only been asked to send a few forms. Il actually send those off now then as they are ready so that the ball is rolling. We've got a bit of a tricky situation for the wedding because we're going to have a big wedding for friends and family 8 months after I get there but go to government centre to have a quick civil ceremony type thing about a week after I get there because we obviously have to marry within 3 months, do you think they'll understand this or frown upon it?

It's pretty normal for folks to have the quick wedding when they arrive to get AoS taken care of, then have a big wedding later. It's not frowned upon. You can get married however you like once you're in the US.

The requirement is to marry and get a legal marriage certificate. It doesn't matter to USCIS in the least how you go about it.
