My fiancé applied for a non-impediment certificate. He was previously married in Jamaica and got a divorce in Canada. He received a letter on special paper from the Registrar General's office stating a non-impediment certificate cannot be issued and it shows his ex-wife's name. Do we just bring that letter along with his divorce decree to the interview or is there a way to get Jamaica to show the divorce and issue a non-impediment certificate? Our interview is in 2 weeks so we are in a rush to get it figured out. Thank you!

I'm in the same situation. Jamaica is the worst place anyone can get married in. I'm trying to get married in Asia (formerly married but, divorce in Jamaica). The Japanese Embassy initially issued a Certificate of No Impediment in the TRUEST sense...in that it shows your current marital status (if you were previously married, you would provide a Divorce Absolute). This was taken away from the embassy and given to the RGD...RGD has now redefine the process (in that they don't consider a Decree Absolute from the Supreme Court of Jamaica) and provides a No Impediment Search that shows your previous marriage. RGD insist that you provide this No Impediment Search along with your Decree Absolute to the foreign government for marriage however, if the RGD can't verify a Decree Absolute from another government agency (Supreme Court) how they expect a foreign government should verify something they can't? The former process with the embassy issuing the certificate was perfect however, the RGD has now perverted the document and made it extremely hard for persons to get married abroad...especially countries where there's no Jamaican Diplomatic Mission and they need the Certificate of No Impediment to be simple as oppose to a wild goose chase.

It's backward and stupid. If the RGD can't provide an adequate document (considering the exorbitant cost) they should stop issuing it.

how far in the process should one apply for the no-impediment?am close to 2 months wait for NOA2.

You have plenty of time.  We received NOA2 and paid $8500 to receive in 7-10 days.  Express 3-4 day service $10000 and regular 4-6 week service $7500

My fiancee just ordered his.  He has never been married

When you go you must bring ID and your birth certificate.  My fiancee did not have his birth certificate but they were kind enough to look it up for him.
