Needing help to answer a question please!

I had booked a flight to visit my fiance 2 weeks prior to receiving notification that our K-1 visa had been approved. The notification was received 4 days before I am due to fly out. I intend to come back to my home land but needed to get there to inspect a house we are building. My question is, would I still be allowed to enter the US on a tourist visa if I am awaiting notification for an interview. Has anyone experienced this and if so what documentation other than a return flight ticket would I need to produce?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You mean your i-129f petition was approved? Your K1 hasn't been.

Yes, you can still travel as you were before. It takes a few weeks for the approved petition to go from the service centre to your local consulate via the NVC. You have a little more waiting before you will be able to do the next steps (more paperwork).

I traveled to the US December 01, 2012. My K1 was not approved until many weeks after i returned to the UK.

I dont think it will make any difference if you have been approved (had your NOA2). When i entered the US, i entered on the Visa Waiver Program, (You are eligible to apply for this - as you are from Australia, so you can get travel authorization here if you havent already done so. You can do it online here:https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/ ) You can log into your details after you have done this, and write your ESTA number down incase you need it at port of entry, but they should have that info automatically when they scan your passport at port of entry. I showed the immigration officer my NOA1 and my return e-ticket. I travelled with our baby, who of course has a UK and US passport, so that was good proof that i intended returning to the UK after my visit. I think it is a good idea to show the immigration officer your NOA1/ NOA2, as it proves that you are going to be attending the Embassy interview in your home country so you would of course intend on returning. And proof that you are doing things legally. They were very pleased that we were doing things the right way. Plus your return ticket shows that you already have your return flight booked, so it should not be a problem. You could also take proof of address in your home country, as this would show you have a residential address that you intend to return to at this stage.
