You could run down to the local SSA office near you and request the SSN be printed out for you so you have it available for an employer or other things that require the number. It is the number that is important, not the card. I think I have shown the actual card amybe 3-4 times in my life. Most of the time they ask for SSN and you just go XXX-XX-XXXX and they write it down. SInce you have the GC you can show that as a List A document for the I-9 and are not required to show the SSC.

Good luck,

Dave

you could go back to the same SSA office,

the next day

and get the # (not the card) .

It's also good to go, that next day, as

you'll learn of any problems from the day before.

we still have to wait 2 weeks for our card & Number

I immigrated last Monday and got my card yesterday. SSA received the paperwork from immigration on the 24th. So it literally took about 3-4 business days for ours to arrive in the mail. You can always go to the SSA and ask for a printout of the SSN.

Hmmm.....

We applied today for SSN. The paper she gave us stated it may take 4 weeks as they will have to check all immigration paperwork to ensure all is correct. We asked if we could get the number before the card and she told us that we would probably get the card before her office even got the number. Is she just ignorant, lazy, or have things changed?

No green card mind you. Just the EAD

Or is possible you applied in MARRIED name or the clerk could not successfully find you in the SAVE database by visa NAME or A#.

However, I will bet that since you just got the EAD, then it's going to take time for the SSA office to hear back from DHS before finding you eligible to receive a card.

and write back of what you did, aye?

No, it's definite that we applied in married name. We had to wait for the EAD before applying for that reason. The printout stated that she could still apply for employment while waiting. I don't see how when employers want a SSN or Tax ID. Anyway, we will wait I guess.

I have read the thread you linked several times...........

ya, you've got a double path to overcome.

1. first filing when showing EAD card - requires DHS verification regardless and

2. first filing in married name - there is NO record of that name in the SAVE DB - requires DHS verification.

Sorry, you're in for a wait.

To be honest, I'm not sure what you're upset about?

My SSN didn't come within 3 weeks so I went to the SSA office and received the card a week later. I could have done exactly like Darnell said and gone back the next day (or two) and gotten the number if I needed it.
