If this is the case, it is a scam.

Do they even do a background check at the auctions?

No background check is required when selling to a licensed individual because theyve been checked to get their license. In cases where they auction to the public, all BATFE and state laws must be followed. That typically includes a background check.

I always thought buybacks went to get melted down.

IMO. If someone goes to a buy back to purchase firearms and they come across something semi rare they should probably tell the person the value. The police have even done this on the rare occasion.

Some buybacks do get melted down but the current fiscal crises in most urban areas dictate they do whatever they can to get cash. Buybacks area great way to raise funds because guns are bought at pennies on the dollar and auctioned/sold at a profit. Plus most buyback monies are donated by civic orgs or big corporations. City pays nothing, gets money in return. Win-win for them.

We had one here a few months ago where a church donated $5,000 in gift cards for the guns. They had the city process them (after citzens posted up outside cherry-picked them ala Gary) and then resell them to dealers in the area. They ran out of cards before noon. Everyone was happy!

No most of the times they are auctioned back... thats reason buy back programs don't work.

1. For criminals it is one of the best way to get rid of evidence.

2. It really does not do nothing.. its a false sense of security.

Sometimes they do come across rare weapon and they do tell ppl, I think there was a case where husband had passed away and wife took some WWII gun and it was a rare gun.

WW2 weapon turned in during gun buy-back program in CT

(NECN/NBC News: Jeff Saperstone) - Police officers in Connecticut received one very unusual weapon during a gun buy-back program last week -- the gun was from World War II and is worth over $30,000.

All sorts of guns were turned in at the gun buy-back event in Hartford last Saturday, but one weapon caught the eyes of officers.

"The chance to see a piece of history -- this … is absolutely unbelievable,” said Officer Lewis Crabtree of the Hartford Police Dept.

That's because the weapon turned in is a World War II-era assault rifle used by the Germans.

"Usually, this rifle would be issued to SS troops,” said Officer John Cavanna of the Hartford Police.

Cavanna is a gun historian.

One woman turned in the weapon, unaware of how much it was worth.

“In excellent condition, this gun is rated at $30,000 to $40,000,” Cavanna said.

But you might be wondering right now, how did a German soldier's weapon wind up in the hands of an American?

“You could kill a solider back then, and if the captain of your fighting unit signed off on it, you could send that gun home to your family or kid brother or cousin,” Cavanna said. “Anything you wanted. Her father, who was a World War II army man, had brought this gun home from the European theater."

The gun, developed in 1944, holds a 30-round magazine and can shoot 500 rounds per minute. Cavanna said every modern assault rifle produced today is based on this design.

As soon as officers saw this weapon, they knew its value.

"This is a gun that should actually be in a museum rather than in a shredder,” Crabtree said.

And that's why they will allow the owner to sell the gun.

"I give her credit for bringing it to us,” Crabtree said.

A piece of World War II history -- saved.

Sales have dropped because of the following.

1. The world didn't end in Dec 21st. 2012 (That's one reasons AK's were selling $300 more than they are now.)

2. Planet X didn't cause a pole shift...and other dire predictions like concentration camps (below) and Nibiru returning.

3. People got over having a black president

4. Obama's oppressive regime didn't take your weapons away. (yes you were deceived...yet again)

5. The whole "preppers" trend ran it's course and they discovered that sitting in the buried shipping container is really boring. (See canceled TV shows for evidence.)

6. You can only scare people into fear purchasing for so long. (Maybe longer for NRA types)

:)

Need to start looking again for that AR.

Walmart had 2 on the shelf this morning. Academy has a whole rack of them. Even .22 ammo was on the shelf today.

No mini-14's though. I'm looking for another ranch model, they never make the ban list.
