you just moved the goal post.(we were talking white priviledge & you're changing it to racial bias in the penal system...different topics)

i put white priviledge it in a vacumn (poor) & asked for the advantages. noone can name them...maybe its not race thats an issue. maybe its below

racial bias in the penal system would be the privilege.

Can I count Marvin as my black friend? If someone asks, I want to say I have at least one.

i think you'd need to ask marvin. maybe a handwritten note with boxes, check yes or no wub.png

I'll add you to my list of white friends, I have a surplus. But your off days will be Monday since we have the furlough going ondancin5hr.gif

I'm almost convinced that Val is black.

I don't think she's black. I think she wishes that she was.

Right on! Now I can play that card.

3 cheers for mom. she did an outstanding job. she raised an self reliant man that has achieved an admireable level of success by following the principles & values she instilled in him.

Thanks, like I said I count myself blessed. Trust me I've heard plenty of kids growing up wishing they were white. The struggle is too much for some folks. Val's points, which I have pointed out as well is what the privilege is. It's not a gift in that aspect of it. It's the notion that things will always go a different way when you're white or black.

Case in point, when I was in my teenager years, I was, more or less the average guy. No thug, just normal. My friends and I would go to the mall to hang out. It used to bug the hell out of me when we would be 3 deep standing around talking and the cops would come up and force us to keep it moving. When I would point out the mob deep group of grunge/emo kids across from us standing around, I would get threatened.

The biggest privilege you get is you will always get the benefit of the doubt, even when you are dead wrong. But for me, I have to prove my innocence even when I am dead right.

my cousins, who were practically my brothers growing up, are half black. i've had experiences with race at a very personal level that maybe you haven't had. it's not an easy thing for children to make sense of. but hey, i'm just a vanilla ice protege. nice karee.

laughing.gif get back in the vacumn. they're both good kids that don't get in trouble. advantages...?

i hardly exist in a vacuum. advantages have been given to you, you don't want to accept them.

You're better than Vanilla Ice, I've seen your music selection. I might go and download some Special Ed this weekend. I miss the old rap that was more about rhyming and reminding us there is a better way than this garbage they have on the radio now.

idk about that. i've got a life history that would shock a lot of people. but, like my challenges in life today. they are mine, i choose to keep them to myself & deal with them as best i can.

you have no arguement in the vacumn. you have nothing to back your accersions. you have backround noise, that you think are answers. they are not.

I couldn't even say what's on the radio these days. I listen to sports talk to and from work, and the rest of the time I watch TV.

Maybe I should clarify. Not you, per say, but white people in general. I'm off the beaten path myself, the military gives me a breath of experience most of my black friends won't come close to seeing. Most of them have never left the state, to them overseas is Mexico.

But I will say that percieved privilege is what drives some of us to do better. One of my co workers who's black said he had a white friend who used to make fun of him because he didn't know how to play golf. Back then he couldn't afford the green fees. He said that alone made him go out, save his money, practice golf whenever he could. Now he beats him at his own game, he even told him, I did it just to show you I could.

What does that have to do with your co worker being black, though?

I listen to the office radio station for 8 hours a day. It's pretty much the same ten songs on repeat.

Neither one of you are missing anything from this side of the pond. The hip-hop, rap songs cuss so much over half the song is silence. I know Val gave me some names of artists, but they gets no airplay. It's a sad state of affairs.
