What? It's self-service now. That is why there are less jobs, not more efficient workers. Try and get a live operator anymore! You have been replaced by an automated script.

Not really. My wife part times in the retail sector. No self service. It's just that where they used to have 3 associates in the store, they now have 2 and when they used to have 2, they now have 1. Same workload. No other changes. Associates just need to get more done in the same amount of time. That is the very definition of increased productivity. Wages haven't gone up, however. The money saved on payroll goes to shareholders and corporate executives. That's the income concentration that goes on. And that is why the economy isn't getting into gear. We're on an unsustainable path. Just that simple.

I never thought about it that way. All this time I thought increased productivity is a good thing. Basically it's squeezing twice as much work out of one person, and only paying for one person. What a scam.

When the median household income is around $35,000 a year, I am stating reality, if we agree the middle class begins somewhere in the six figures.

Depending on where you live. Let's say that regardless of where you live, a households that doesn't pull in at least 100K a year, is not part of the middle class. You probably need substantially more in the higher COL areas but even in Buttfcuk, AL you ought to have a household income of 100K to qualify as middle class. If that's what we're saying, then the "middle" class is probably less than 10% of the population.

Yes it is a scam. If a person is asked to do the job of two, then that person ought to be compensated significantly better as a result. Not twice the wages but substantially more. That's not happening, however. The reverse actually occurs. Starting wages in retail are - in real dollar terms - what they were 5 years ago. Adjusted for inflation, these workers make less than the workers made 5 years ago and yet, they work more than their peers 5 years ago did. That's what's going on. And that is why ever more working people end up on public assistance while executive compensation and corporate profits are soaring. It's the race to the bottom for the rank and file and the race against wall for the overall economy.

my first real job was at trak auto; dunno if anybody remembers those stores but they were a part of the dart group. the company knew it was going under (they eventually sold to advance auto) but it took quite a few years for the stores to start closing down. by the time our store was about 6 months from closing, store payroll was cut back to almost nothing. most days i would work (as manager) with only one other part time employee. there were times when the other person wouldn't show up, quit and i'd be the only one in the store with keys to everything and the safe combo. even with the limited workers corporate still expected us to be responsible for all sales, the cash registers, the safe, inventory, stocking, turning drums/rotors, putting on wiper blades, renting out engine lifts and all kinds of other warranty issues (paperwork nightmares). it was unbearable. our store would still have 30,000 thousand dollar days. but they were squeezing the money out as long as they could on as little wages as possible.

Ha, no joke. They talk about how productivity is up in the United States. What they mean is more people are desperate to keep their job.
