Must be easy to preach shunning materialism when you live in a multi-billion dollar estate with servants attending to your every need wearing the very finest garments. Our own bodies are material and need that material just to survive. So it can't be this kind of materialism, must be all that ####### we are importing from China. Not to difficult to give that up, causes a lot more grief than pleasure.

What little pleasure I have is to spend some time with my wife or playing Lincoln logs with my grandson, should I give that up as well? Closest I ever got to meeting a higher up in the church was with a bishop, where I was suppose to get on my knees and kiss his ring. Kept quiet, but did wonder why he wasn't washing my feet instead.

Also use to tilth to the church and pay high tuition so my kids would become good catholics and would have a better place in heaven. But then one of my kids got kicked off my health insurance policy due to a precondition and went darn near broke paying for his health care. Church was no help, was more important to my pastor to lay out $60,000 for a new cross than to give me a break on tuition cost, so was forced to move my kids to a public school. Received zero help from this so-called charitable institution.

Then to only learn my hard earned money was being used for pedophile priest for cover ups. This even generated more concerns, because two of my sons were alter boys.

Did manage to get my first marriage annulled, tried the same thing for my wife only to learn it had to be done in the Colombian church. Never met a bunch of more corrupt people in my life. Did read forbidden material, like the forbidden gospels of James, Thomas, Judas, and Mary Magdalene. Right or wrong, made a lot more sense to me. So going this route instead, But may meet some of you in hell.

Religions tend to be corrupt. It's too bad, but it's how it is.

Shunning materialism is, however, a good idea. The less you want, the less you suffer.

Completely agree with you but to OP’s point it would be wiser to practice what you preach.

If Church was going out and preaching to shun materialism and they are gathering valuables from all around the world wear finest, dine finest travel in luxury how can they talk about shunning materialism?

NickD - why are you comparing life at the Vatican with life around you ?

Tis a different venue, altogether.

Btw crosses are pagan in origin and won't be found in heaven.
