Yeah. That's becoming big news around here. No one from the city will even comment on it to the media any longer. The whole thing is all hush hush. Some neighbor actually took a picture of the guys dead body inside his garage which absolutely conflicts with the story the cops told the investigators. They initially said he was on the side of his house.

Not everybody places so little value on their rights.

When your neighbor can make a phone call and the government can arrest you then search your house, the days of us being secure in our homes is over.

I really will do my best to refrain from saying, "I told you so."

Allowing the cops to enter your home is not "placing little value on your rights".

I guess the point is, what if your neighbor DIDN'T like you? Would it be ok for them to call up on you for no reason and have the cops in your house?

Why have warrants at all? By your logic, the cops can just dream up some reason to invade your privacy, and everything is cool. Cops never abuse their power. wacko.png

This whole line of thinking of "as long as I'm not doing anything wrong, then I have nothing to worry about" is troubling. To me anyway. I'm not saying we don't need cops. We do. But they have to operate within the law and not take shortcuts. There's a reason we have these protections from abuse by the government.

Of course cops abuse their power. My husband easily could have said no and they would need a warrant. But he didn't, because there really was no reason to drag on this silly situation any longer. The neighbor overreacted to a situation and it was resolved in less than ten minutes.

In my story, no laws were broken. No rules were overlooked. Nobody's rights were trampled on. I'm not speaking for all situations, I'm speaking about the response to MY situation. The "OMG WHY DID YOU LET THEM INNNNN" response is crazy.

I guess most people have a good perception of the police. I don't. One of the places I grew up in Detroit was the last street in Detroit before you were in the suburbs. At the time they had a residency rule, meaning if you worked for the city, you had to live in the city. So most of the people on the street were policemen and firemen. I can't tell you how many times these guys would kick the $hit out of their wives or children drunk off their a$$ and the cops would come and not do anything about it, because they were cops. The firemen never seemed to do this. I think alot of these guys become cops so they can dress up in that uniform and be the bada$$ they never were in high school or whatever. I've also witnessed numerous cases of police brutality while they were on duty. I'm probably the wrong person to be having an unbiased discussion about the police. I don't automatically assume the police are there to help out. In alot of cases, it's quite the opposite.

There is no doubt that a good amount of cops are total arseholes. A lot of them are the biggest law breakers around. But I've also seen the good side of cops, the ones that do their job to the best of their ability, put up with the lowest forms of life on the planet, then have to shake it off to go home to their wife and kids. It's not easy and it's not perfect, but I don't know of many things that are.

Yes exactly. Everything in your story worked out just fine. Probably 99 of 100 work out the way you describe. What about the 1 of 100 that does not? That's the point. Just because it worked out for you, doesn't mean it works out for everyone that way.

Well of course not. I wasn't attempting to imply that the cop always does the right thing.

I can only speak of my personal situation, which was what was being questioned. To imply that my husband doesn't care about his freedom or his rights because he allowed the cops into the house that night is insane to me.

I don't think it's insane at all. But hey, that's just me. There's a reason they needed permission to enter your husband's house.

99% sounds pretty good to me. Imagine what the world would be like if even half of us could achieve a 99% success rate.

So what should he have done? In order to prove he cares about his rights and the liberty of his fellow Americans... what was the proper reaction?

Proper reaction would've been to say, "You do not have my permission to search my home. Good night."

Ever notice how police show up expecting to enter your home? They shouldn't have that expectation at all. They shouldn't have any more of an expectation just because someone called them. They should only enter a citizen's home at the request of the citizen or when they personally observe a crime in progress.

I can't believe you folks are actually pushing for the police to be able to enter your home just because your neighbors called. That's amazing to me.

It's also shocking that you haven't made the connection to waiving your rights to privacy and the TSA at airports. It started off simple enough, didn't it?
