I would rather them search than not search in that situation. Because while I was not there, and definitely not in any danger, the next woman might be. And I'd hope they'd look for her and make sure she's alright.

If your neighbor lady doesnt like you, all she has to do is call the police and they can search your house. That sounds like liberty!

It had nothing to do with her liking anyone - she didn't know anybody. She heard an argument, overreacted, and called the cops. The cops, doing their job, made sure nobody was in any danger and it was a misunderstanding.

They came in, looked in a few rooms, talked to me over the phone, and left.

And I have no problem with them doing any of the above.

Maybe the next lady will have a valid concern and the police will do the same thing and someone might actually be in trouble. Someone they wouldn't have known was in the house if they hadn't stepped inside.

Yes, what a terrible world that would be.

Nobody's rights were violated. It was a calm, rational reaction to a stupid situation.

Suggesting my husband shouldn't have let them in is a ridiculous reaction to a stupid situation. Not everybody is so paranoid that they feel the need to freak out when a cop dares to ask them a question.

Not everybody places so little value on their rights.

When your neighbor can make a phone call and the government can arrest you then search your house, the days of us being secure in our homes is over.

I really will do my best to refrain from saying, "I told you so."

I guess the point is, what if your neighbor DIDN'T like you? Would it be ok for them to call up on you for no reason and have the cops in your house?

Why have warrants at all? By your logic, the cops can just dream up some reason to invade your privacy, and everything is cool. Cops never abuse their power. wacko.png

This whole line of thinking of "as long as I'm not doing anything wrong, then I have nothing to worry about" is troubling. To me anyway. I'm not saying we don't need cops. We do. But they have to operate within the law and not take shortcuts. There's a reason we have these protections from abuse by the government.

That's why there are false report laws, you can be charged for filing a false report with police.

Warrants serve a great purpose when the police are trying to build a case against a drug dealer or organized crime, but they are a deterrent when quick decisions need to be made, which is why we have exigent circumstance laws too.

Would you rather have some woman beaten to a pulp that the police can't get to because her husband won't let them in the house?

Of course not. What's to stop the police from gathering evidence without a warrant by simply saying "I swear I heard a woman screaming?"

Nothing, in fact I said that very thing earlier, they can simply "think" they heard something. But if they're looking for solid evidence that will hold up in court, that's not really the way to go, a good lawyer will have that evidence thrown out. If the cops want in, they'll get in. All this macho 4th amendment "I have rights" is nothing but grandstanding 99% of the time by people that really do have something to hide, and it' more than likely to land in you behind bars if you push it.

Asserting your rights has nothing to do with hiding something.

I guess most people have a good perception of the police. I don't. One of the places I grew up in Detroit was the last street in Detroit before you were in the suburbs. At the time they had a residency rule, meaning if you worked for the city, you had to live in the city. So most of the people on the street were policemen and firemen. I can't tell you how many times these guys would kick the $hit out of their wives or children drunk off their a$$ and the cops would come and not do anything about it, because they were cops. The firemen never seemed to do this. I think alot of these guys become cops so they can dress up in that uniform and be the bada$$ they never were in high school or whatever. I've also witnessed numerous cases of police brutality while they were on duty. I'm probably the wrong person to be having an unbiased discussion about the police. I don't automatically assume the police are there to help out. In alot of cases, it's quite the opposite.
