Given comparable qualifications, white male job applicants with a criminal record have equal odds of landing a job as black male applicants with a clean background. If you have a name on your resume that suggests you are white, your chances of getting a call back are 50% higher than submitting that same resume with a name suggesting that you're black. But we want to sit here and pretend that there's a level playing field, yes?

I once had a job on an overseas military contract. Another gentleman and myself were arriving on the same flight, and somehow, the manager of the section we were assigned to determined both our names were black, and because of the cities where we signed our contracts (Oakland in my case, Baltimore in his case), so they spent a few weeks preparing the rest of the employees for our arrival. To say they were relieved when they met us was an understatement. I still wonder what they really had in store for, as the roommate they gave us was an out of favor total racist.
