Hi all

This has probably been asked a million times already but would just appreciate some clarification:

My wife does not earn enough to support me, therefore we need (and have) a co-sponsor.

Does the co-sponsor have to fill out a separate I-864 form? The only reason I ask is there's a section in the form which prattles on about "income being counted from your household etc etc" and this seems to negate the need for the co-sponsor to fill out their own form.

Any clarification would be appreciated...

Thanks

Here's a copy/paste of an answer I gave last week that might help you see when household income might be useful

Example:

25,000 required

Dad makes 20,000

Mom makes 20,000

Neither qualifies to sponsor.

Because they live in the same house and are related, they can pool their income.

Dad does I-864 and adds Mom's income in the proper place as a household member, but he needs her agreement.

Mom grants her permission for Dad to use her income (and also pledges support to immigrant) with the I-864A.

Same scenario if immigrant didnt make enough money and wanted to pool with dad, who didn't make enough. Allowed because they are related and live together.

If Dad makes enough on his own, it is cleaner to just let Dad be the joint sponsor with his own separate I-864.

Thanks for your help - Nich I agree with your final statement - just tidier if dad makes enough on his own, which he does.
