Hi everyone. I'm a newbie in this forum but I really need some help. I am a new army wife and we are stationed in FT Bliss. My husband and I got married in April and as I was in the country with a J1 visa (exchange student) we decided that it was best (because of the circumstances) for me to stay here and start the adjustment process than go back to Spain (where I am from). We enrolled into DEERS with no SSN. They were pretty rude and never really explained us all the situation/process. They said we just needed some proof of effort to get my card renewed once the first expired. So we filled for my adjustment of status and this week I got my case numbers so I went to renew my DEERS card as it expired 10 days ago. Today they told us that this will be the last card I will get until I get a SSN with my green card which from what I know it can take up to a year- I got pretty upset with the lack of information and the rudeness... They basically made me feel quite degraded and like I should be thankful enough for this, like I have not the status of any other regular wife. I am wondering if this information is true and what could we do about it. I am afraid of going without healthcare for good half a year or more after my card expires again waiting on the adjustment of status process. I decided to stay because my husband and I wanted to be together even that meant be here ''trapped'' for a while (I'm a thing doer and just waiting on all this process is driving me crazy). It is pretty crazy to me think that even I am married to him I won't get benefits as the rest of the wives because the USCIS process is so backed up. Specially when I come from a country where healthcare it is free for all civilians and everyone's taken care off. I also should be getting my employment authorization in within 3 months (guess that will provide a SSN) but they said that number will not be valid as it is just for working purposes and I will have to wait to the approval of my permanent residency. Any advice?sad.png Thank you!rose.gifheart.gif

That ssn will be valid. The card will have something stating valid only with work authorization. Once you vet your adjustment of status done you will get a card with no restrictions. Your ssn will not change. Nothing to worry about. I would have your husband talk to the personnel flight's supervisor. The info they are giving you is inaccurate.

Removal of conditions Journey

16 March 2012 Sent I-751 package from Aviano AB, Italy.

29 March 2012 Received everything back...wrong fee. thought we didn't have to pay biometrics since we were sending fingerprint cards and passport photos.

30 March 2012 Sent everything out again from Aviano AB, Italy.

10 April 2012 Check cashed

17 April 2012 Received NOA1 dated 6 April.

06 Dec 2012 Received 10 yr green card. Letter said it was approved 28 November 2012.

Also they can and will have to remew your id card in deers every few months until you get your ssn number with your work authorization. They will just use a generated fake number until you get the ssn card with the work authorization.

Thanks for the reply. Any link or regulation where I can check this or show them? I guessed it should be that way but they made clear I would have no renewals until I got my greencard, not even with the ssn in the employment authorization... I'll try to get another renewal but I will like to bring something where it actually says that and not have to get in a argument with them or have my husband looking for their superiors etc...

You had a J-1 visa? Usually, when in country on a J-1 visa, you qualified to apply for , and get, a SSN.

--

Otherwise, at the moment - If you filed the EAD with the big AOS package, you can apply for a SSN after the EAD arrives - figure 90 to 100 days after filing the big AOS set.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

A SSN is an SSN no matter what it says on the card. Once you get your number it will not change. Tell them to give you the reference they cant give you another id card. I think your husband needs to get his chain of command involved.

I dont specifically have the regulation, but i have a few friends that work in the personnel section.

I experienced thus last May, when we went to renew my spouse ID card. The ppl working at ACS refused to issue a new one, as they said I'm only entitled to have it renewed 3 times, 90 days each time. We got married June 2012, but I only visited and got the card made in November as I was in Malaysia before then.

the staff told me they counted the free 3 90-day period from when we got married and refused to give me a card, and asked for a letter from the SSN office, which of course we did not hv. My husband explained that we were in the middle of the CR1 process and it was not our fault it's backed up so much but the staff wouldn't issue me a card. They kept saying I won't be covered under Tricare and refused to check with their supervisor.

so in the end, they issued me one but it said I had no medical benefits on the back of the card. This made my husband even angrier because I'm pregnant & we would need that benefit the most! We then went to Tricare and talked to the lady there, who assured us we were still covered under Tricare (even though the ACS people said I was not)

I was able to have my doctor's visits after that so I really don't know why the ACS ppl would say that. My husband went back to talk to them and ask for further clarification, even talking to their supervisor but none would help us. Instead they kept saying the free 3 90-day period started from our marriage date.

I went back to Malaysia in May so I had most of my check ups there. It was free as I went to a gov clinic/hospital and they even gave me vitamins etc. Makes me sad to think that a country like the US can't provide the same for their residents, unless they hv health insurance..

I hv another appointment with the OBGYN next week so I will report back and let you know how it went. We haven't gone back to renew my mil spouse ID so I believe it is expired now. We might just wait for the SSN to arrive but God knows when that'll happen!

we don't know if the ASC staff had told us bad info as I read it might not be so. Anyone can chime in to clarify?

My visa expired while I'm applying for the adjustment of status for a permanent residency and does not apply anymore... the permanent residency process takes tooooo long and now I'm in a legal limbo.

Doing my research -as no one offers any real help in the ACS or my husbands chain of command (they gave us the number of a lady who was supposed to help us but never even picked up the phone or replied a text msg.... and no one else's shows any effort)- I finally found this form online some days ago where it clearly says this

''Block 44. SSN or DoD ID No. Enter the dependent’s SSN, DoD ID number, ITIN or
preferred, and an alternate
me Address.
temporary identification number (TIN). A TIN will automatically be assigned and
automatically generated by RAPIDS for categories of beneficiaries who do not yet have
SSNs, such as newborns and foreign spouses, awaiting a SSN, or for those who do not have
and are not eligible for a SSN. Medical benefits may be suspended if a SSN is not provided
within 270 days. For initial enrollment a SSN, ITIN or TIN is
should not be used unless the SSN, ITIN or TIN is unavailable''
So I should be covered at least for 270 days (as you said 3 90 days period) and hope that my SSN arrives within that period of time and that they will accept it to renew my card... which they should, I'm bringing this form just in case they need to remember how to do their work. Once again they not even were rude but I also find out that they give the wrong information over and over at ACS. This is my 2nd 90 day period still and they said it will be the last. Anyway, I don't care. In October when I need to renew my card again I will bring this form and talk with the superior there and report these people.
Hope this is useful for you guys too.

thanks for this! we're going on base to renew my mil dep ID, so we'll see what happens. I'm out of status (no more free 270 days) and the medical benefits are no longer offered, tho tricare lady said differently, and I also have a doctor's appointment later, so we'll see what happens! Will report back once I'm back!

Cool! Good luck!

tho my ID expired on July 24th, i was able to get to my appointment without a problem. I got a new temporary ID card, but without medical direct care. But still weird tho since I was able to use the medical facilities when the card says no direct care. All in all, it was a little worrying, especially since I'm due in a couple of months. But was told to come in as soon as I get my SSN, so they can give me a proper ID card.

So a lot changed since my last post. I never got my SSN or residency because I decided to report my husbands domestic abuse after living a nightmare for months and he withdrew the application. I am now starting the process all over again. there is a FAP investigation going on, we are separated and he's trying to make my life as difficult as it can be. I need to renew my ID card again next month but I won't have either a SSN or ITIN number. how did you get yours renewed after the 270 days? His command keeps refusing to give me a power of attorney from my husband (I have right now a protective order against him due to the domestic abuse suffered) to renew it as they say I will be out of that temporary ID card period.
