It was almost always referred to as the War of Secession in my history classes, which it would have been, had the Confederacy not resigned. I have also heard it called the Southern Rebellion, which is probably the most accurate title.

War Between the States is another title I am familiar with.

Just ask a question or raise a counter point. Bill is not dumb.

Who is Bill?

I am interested in American culture, hence my question .

1980's. The local town center, "People's Park", is laid out like a chicken foot peace sign. The campus was referred to as "Frisbee U". Campus speakers tended to be Communists and anti-war protesters. Just a hunch.

Interesting. So what did the graduates become after college?

The "War Between the States" is what we were taught in public school in Texas in the 1960s. The others were generally slang terms. The war was fought between two countries, the CSA and the USA. The USA did not recognize the existance of the CSA, hence in their imagination it was a "civil war". Even then it would have been a rebellion, not a civil war. The CSA simply had no interest in governing the USA and therefore it is not even close to the definition of a "civil war".

Many other countries recognized the CSA. Texas is generally recognized to have been an independent country from 1836 until 1845 yet MORE foreign government recognized the CSA than recognized Texas.

Great Britian provided arms and advisors to the CSA as a matter of government policy. More Confederates were armed with 1858 Enfield rifled muskets than any other weapon.

The emancipation proclamation freed slaves "in states in open rebellion". There WERE NO STATES in open Rebellion, they had seceeded! They were no longer US states. US states with slavery that remained in the union were not affected by the EP. Foreign countries were not affected by the EP. The EP had no effect, other than political, for Lincoln. It was a nice speech.
