That is precisely how the legislation is being proposed and the very reason I say that calling it 'path to citizenship' is a misnomer...

There is no path to citizenship because naturalization is not mandatory nor expected.

Mandatory and option are two different thing, I think initially there should not be even option for citizenship just the legal status go for sometime see how things work and option to apply for citizenship could be added later point in time.

Reason once the option of path to citizenship is included and found to be abused it would be difficult to revert but if it is added later on there would be no opposition at that time to activate that option.

When I say path to citizenship is there means there is an option.

So first it was this 2 year EAD thing for children of illegal immigrants with no permanent residency

Now it's a green card with no path to citizenship.

If anyone thinks this isn't going to lead to citizenship, you're fooling yourself. Like the politicians are just gonna give away permanent residency and not expect some votes in return? There will be a path to citizenship, they just wont say it yet.

Why does it matter?

Still, there is no path to citizenship. The only path available is that leading to LPR status. From that point on, the residence requirements and everything else apply if any of these individuals were to contemplate naturalization.

By using the misnomer 'path to citizenship' many are pandering to those who believe these undocumented individuals will become citizens immediately, if the law is enacted.

Since ridding the nation of all illegal immigrants or aliens if you prefer would be extremely difficult and expensive, a path to being here legally seems prudent. I haven't read the legislation yet so I can't speak specifically to its specific problems or merits.

I got my wife here legally and I am not going to cry about the unfairness of it all.

Yep and personally I think those ppl who have done everything by following the legal process should have the higher priority and their cases should be processed first.

Then they wouldn't be politicians.

Yeah, I know. Not sure what I was thinking. It's just funny to me how both parties are now falling over themselves to do this, so they can take the credit for it and hope they get rewarded with votes for it later. It's also amazing that when they came out with that DACA thing, they made a big point about it not being a path to citizenship. I remember thinking yeah right, what are they gonna do, give them 2 year EADs for the rest of their life?

They're a slimey "evolving" bunch up there in D.C.

Yes from LPR the path is open for citizenship.... even that is not required.

If you just want to bring them in the system they can be given a status like H1 or something with may be longer duration say 10 yrs.

I am sure none of the political party would wanna do that coz that is solving the prob but they will not get the votes that they are looking for.

If you believe it's not going to lead to citizenship, I have a bridge for you to buy. Of course it's going to lead to citizenship. I can hear the rally cry now. "We pay taxes and we can't vote!!!" "We pay in to Social Security and we can't collect on it!!"

I bet you believed them when they said that this DACA thing would only be 2 year EADs as well. It's going to lead to citizenship
