Seems like it would be cheaper easier to make them legal. Then they could pay taxes and we wouldn't have to spend taxes on the process of sending them back.

Either that or punishment is strict enough that they do not want to violate the law.

In lot of the cases when they are caught at border with stolen or fake documents they just release them on other side.

If you look up I am sure you can find a poll that was done few months back which suggested that they would use more resources than they would pay in the system.

The current immigration bill is nothing more than ahh you did not care about our laws no big deal we will tweak our law to meet your needs.

What about the next wave of illegal immigrants? Why even have USCIS or CBP? Just give them a U.S. passport when we catch someone crossing the border illegally. I mean if it's cheaper and all, why screw around with immigration laws at all?

Yeah open your borders and take off your door. Live a little! Life is wonderful. Stop the paranoia.

The thing with this type of mentality is that people, especially the younger folks, tend to have a "it won't happen to me" mentality so i don't put a lot of faith in scaring them out of coming here illegally. Look at the metal gymnastics people do here because they can't possibly live another couple months without their fiance or wife or whatever.

You're right about this part. I especially hate that I had to pay out the butt to get my wife here and still have years of more payments to come. BUT, if you could make them legal and get them paying income taxes, I think it may be a necessary evil to getting ourselves out of this debt crisis. Punishing them means putting them in a prison cell that I also have to pay for so I'm not overly inclined to opt for that.

We can have CPB act as Walmart type greeters and hand out free tickets to Baseball games and point them to the nearest gun shop so they can make their first purchase.

One thing that has always caught my attention is the misnomer 'path to citizenship' used by everyone - including in immigration forums, such as these - in reference to immigration reform.

Nowhere in the immigration laws of the US is there the presumption that a LPR become a citizen, nor is it a requirement in order to maintain residence in the US. One may, as many do, remain a LPR for one's entire life and never have to fear any sort of retaliation, as a result.

I wonder why no one uses the term 'path to legalization', which is not only appropriate but also the only true statement that can be made in regards to immigration reform.

'Path to Citizenship' may be a misnomer in some cases, but in this case it denotes an important distinction. Some people support legalization of illegal immigrants without a path to citizenship. They could have a status similar to legal permanent residents allowing them to have some status, but that status could not be used to obtain citizenship. Obviously, this is not a simple argument, but 'path to citizenship' is important. It doesn't mean they have to take it. It's a simple question of whether or not it should exist.

So do you think all polls should be ignored?

For any poll if one really wants to know the outcome it is important to understand the environment, purpose, the group conducted the poll their bias, who financed the poll, sample, sample size, sample demographics etc. is important.

Personally I would not take any poll does not matter who did at their face value.

Polls are the best tool available to gauge public sentiment. They tune out the loud minorities - on either side of most issues - and give a clearer picture of where the country stands. Polls have provided a clear picture on how public opinion on issues shifts. Take same sex marriage, for example. There was majority opposition not too long ago and many states passed same sex marriage bans. Polls no longer see majority opposition and voters have validated that by rejecting further attempts to cement inequality. Whether you personally accept any poll data or not does matters little. It not change the fact that polls are the best gauge of public opinion that is available. Not any single poll. But if the vast majority of them indicate a certain trend or a certain shift in public opinion then it's pretty safe to say that a trend actually exists or that a shift of public opinion is actually occurring.

I realize that might be the reason but still it make no sense at all. It sounds like another flavor of 'equal but separate' to me. IMHO we already have way too many people attempting to create castes within our country and our society. We really need to get rid of inequalities rather than just repackage them.
