Hello evryone. I have a green card for almost a year. Got it as a marriage based. I have been working at a big corporation part time. Recently i applied to work at another place and DHS said that i am not authorized to work. My green card is ok. Whats going on? I have no issues with work authorization at my old place. Does anyone run into this problem?

All green card holders are authorised to work in the US while their green card is valid.

If your new employer ran you through E-Verify and it came back as saying you are not authorised to work then this is an error in the E-Verify system which you must get corrected.

Did you update your LPR status with the SSA? You shouldn't have to, but maybe this is where the system went wonky?

yes, I did. Frankly, I did self check on E-verify page of DHS website and it said that I have been verified as authorized to work. I don't understand why it shows different record when my empoyer did same thing.

Ask your employer to show you the page? Maybe they put your ssn in wrong when they checked or something...

I know you are mad but just relax. You know you are authorized to work and you have the documents to prove it. So just work on getting everyone straightened out. You'll have to tell them calmly that there must be a mistake, because you are a permanent resident and all PRs can work. Ask them what they used, make sure the number was correct, etc. Show them the I-9, and show them that you have a List A document, the Greencard. That proves you can work.

Do you have a new SSN? They changed the numbering last year or so. It used to be that they were given in chronological order and an employer could verify it by getting a printed list of what numbers had been given out. Since some time (I can't remember exactly when now, but in the last year or so, maybe 2) they have started randomizing the numbers so that list doesn't work. Some employers might still be relying on a list of some sort. And, some of the numbers that used the be slated for "not-useable" started getting used, like a whole swath of numbers originally reserved for "railroad workers." That might throw a HR person off (remember most working people have SSNs they got when they were kids).

Or, make sure they aren't checking your credit score. Some companied check a credit score before hiring, which to me is bogus, but they want to make sure that the person isn't irresponsible and in lots of debt. Have you done anything to build a credit score? If not, and that is the case, you might explain you are a new immigrant and that it takes a while to populate a credit score. Yours might be coming back empty.

Just relax and communicate with them and figure out the problem. You know you are in the right so you can work it out calmly.

Hon, my credit score is exellent, it has nothing to do with that. but I did talk to DHS people and they said my paperwork is ok. My question is, why in bloody hell they would hire me first (I have been working for 4 weeks already) taking taxes out of my pay check, and run a back ground check only after 4 weeks as I worked:) Idiots!!!
