Norwegian rape victim is sentenced, then 'pardoned' in Dubai

Marte Deborah Dalelv's case highlights concerns over the vulnerability of women to sexual assault in the United Arab Emirates.

After a week of international outrage and diplomatic pressure, Dubai’s Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has pardoned Marte Deborah Dalelv.

Ms. Dalelv, a 24-year old Norwegian citizen, was sentenced to 16 months in prison last week, after reporting that a colleague raped her in March. Her case highlights concerns that often harsh laws on gender in the United Arab Emirates can leave women vulnerable to sexual violence.

An interior designer based in Qatar, Dalelv was on a business trip to Dubai in March when the rape took place while on a night out with colleagues. When she went to the police to report the incident, they took away her passport and money, reports the BBC.

The woman wasn't punished for being raped. She was punished for having extramarital sex. I suppose if someone gets kicked out of a moving car they may get fined for jaywalking.

Law enforcement in Dubai is a joke. Here is another article of a man being jailed for filming an assault.

Under UAE law, the minor assault charge could potentially earn the official one year in jail and a maximum fine of Dhs10,000 if found guilty. Recording without permission and defaming a person can result in a two-year sentence and Dhs20,000 if convicted,

I think someone in the government realized that by charging the victim in this case, they had just flushed millions, if not billions of tourist dollars down the toilet. Hence the reason for the about face. I guess you can build all the huge malls and skyscrapers money can buy, but at the end of the day if the place is still run by religious psychopaths, your true colors will eventually emerge. One day ( soon if Steven has his way) all those oil dollars will go away, and they'll just be another Yemen or Pakistan with religious nuts making the rules. Then they can sit around and think about how things might have been if they didn't bet the ranch on some super power in the sky that doesn't exist.

Several days later, she was charged with the crimes of consuming alcohol, falsely reporting a rape, and having extramarital sex, reports Dubai’s Khaleej Times. Last week, a court sentenced her to 16 months in prison, followed by deportation from the UAE.
